baseball autograph question

My grandfather in law worked for a MLB team in the 1930s-1940s and had a ball signed by a big named player...however, upon getting the ball signed, he put scotch tape over the signature. Will PSA still authenticate it with tape over the signature or is it completely devalued/worthless because of the tape?

Certainly devalued but not worthless if desirable enough signature. I assume (?) it could still be authenticated.

I also assume it could be conserved to remove the tape. Is it badly discolored?

  • its not badly discolored....signature still looks great for being that old for sure. AND yes, its desirable (A very rare HOF'er). I assumed some de-valuation (sp?) but wanted to know if it was worth going through the authentication process knowing costs, etc.

No way to even guess if it's worth it without knowing who it is, or even better a photo.
