Is there a reputable software for enlargement of photos?

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,110 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've downloaded a couple of programs and/or extensions and they were junk. I would like one similar to the magnifier on CoinFacts. Any ideas or recommendations?
Thanks,
Jim

Are you trying to resize the photos or just magnify them? On your pc or phone?

    Hi Jim,

Magnifying a photo for clarity will also depend on picture’s pixel size.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, there is a built in magnifier.

Please see below pics for steps.

Save the photo and open it. Click on Edit

    Click on pencil icon

Click on “+” icon bottom right

    Select magnifier

There will be a ⭕️ or bubble for magnifier. You can maximize or minimize the size and move it over on areas where you want to magnify.

    Hope this helps….

If I remember right, you have an android right Jim? If so, it's a lot easier to do than apple. Just hold your finger on the picture, a box will pop up and click the option "search image with google lens". Then you can zoom it in.

The one on CoinFacts is not actually an enlarger - it just shows you part of the photo at 100%.
The photos there are huge (usually at least 4400 x 2200 pixels) and are reduced to fit your screen normally.
So using the "magnifier" shows a part of the photo at 100%.

It's not the same as trying to enlarge a photo to 200% or higher, where the software has to interpolate pixels in between the original pixels, I've found that going to 200% can be OK, but going higher usually gets pretty messy/blurry.

Thank you all. Yes, Bobby, I have an android Galaxy S22+. Thank you, Criselda for the info, but do not have an Iphone. I used to have a magnifier on my desktop that I just clicked on it and an enlargement circle appeared and move it over what I wanted to magnify, but it became lost and all the ones I have downloaded are pretty much junk without control. All I want it for is for MintMarks, die cracks and various attributes for coins. I do not wish to enlarge the coins, but just a small area without having to take it into photoshop or with Snip & Sketch. I can do most anything with an image, but do not wish to take the time to do so. When looking at a hundred or so photos it is very cumbersome.
I truly do appreciate your info yos. I did not know that or at least had never considered it.

If I read you correctly ? Your looking for the close up view and the capture of that image, without distortion, that the movement in the area of the cursor provides, so to inspect or document a photo's fine points. ?
Wow, that was a mouth full.
I have know idea if available. Study and test dpi. (dot per inch) That should help the cropping of an image.
I have a long forgotten program that I could access at any time and it's so fast and easy to use it leaves Photoshop in it's dust.
I'v had other designers send me their problems, like to recreate a logo that is no longer on file or lost.
With many other features in photography, but not what the first sentence describes.
    Although ?

On the S22+ go to Settings / Accessibility / Visual Enhancements / Magnifier

Then toggle on. Follow the instructions for use. Hopefully this is what you are looking for without any further apps. The Magnifier can be used on text, pics, etc.

See the "o" in the word "work" it's the closest I can zoom normally but with magnifier engaged I can enlarge much larger, see second pic.

It will zoom even more but then I lose the outline of the entire letter. Lol

Thank you @Tramp. I do not really need or want it on my cell, just my pc. I appreciate the reply and the education.

So, under your PC Settings / Ease of Access, you don't have "Magnifier" to select and toggle to engage?

Hey Jim, I have windows 10 and there is an option in the upper right hand corner to maginify. Of course, the magnification is only as good as the pictures pixel quality.

Adobe Lightroom requires a subscription, but it would fit the bill. You can import a host of photos, click to zoom in on one in the viewer and use arrow keys to move to the next photo. Once the program has zoomed in it stays that way until you click to zoom out. For what you're hoping to do for looking at mintmarks, it is rather perfect.

On my PCs, I normally use IrfanView to view and edit photos.
It's free, and I've used it for many years.
I have it set up as my default application for opening .JPG files.
To view at 100% or any % you can use the View menu, the + key, or Ctrl-H to view at 100%.

Thanks, yos. I have several editing programs including the max CS5 Adobe with most everything, but just too detailed for this need. I just want to clice on a photo and immediately magnify any small portion. Ebay came a long way when they started their mag project, but it just doesn't work on all auctions. Due to photo quality, although ebay will stop you from uploading too small of a photo and require a larger if needed. When I view several hundred auctions on ebay or others speed is what I'm looking for.
Thanks to you all for your info and help.

To view photos at 100% on ebay, with the Chrome browser, I do this:

    • right-click on the photo
    • choose "Open image in new tab"
    • click on the "+" if the photo is not yet at 100%

    Hi Jim,

I have Windows 10 Pro on my PC and my to attempt to assist above was referring to Settings in MS Windows rather than Settings in Edge(browser) The Magnifier in MS Windows 10 and 11 works really good to enlarge what you are viewing on the PC no matter the browser you use.

The Magnifier floats while viewing content, the pointer moves the pic to the area you want to concentrate on and the mouse wheel can increase our decrease the magnification. The Magnifier is standard for windows but can be turned on or off. It may have just been turned off at some point in your windows settings.

I just right click... Download, and then double click on it which opens in (Windows) Photos and then I can use the mouse wheel to zoom in as far as it will go.
