When compact disc's first came out, they were distributed in long boxes. They seem to be quite rare and collectible items. Did any of you keep your longbox cd's? This Rolling Stones longbox went for a pretty good price($1,500).

Probably did that thinking they would go inside record bins and the CD case by itself would fall in and be unseen...
Yes, I remember those. Haven't thought about that format for decades.

I think I still have several packed away in the garage. However, the CD isn't still sealed inside. I think the value is that it is unopened. It's probably like the difference in value of a sealed 1980 wax pack vs just the wax wrapper.
In "record collecting" circles the Goat Head CD Long Box is a recognized rarity, sealed its a Grail for many Stones fans. Like with McCartney, Rolling Stones were not on CBS for long during the CD era. Goats Head is one of the nicer outliers.
The market for Collectible's CD hit it's highs from 2006-2010 and have been steadily dropping since. No real pandemic bump either. Not sure if prices will ever recover as the collector's base for these things is small and dwindling rapidly, ain't no new collectors in pipeline to replace those lost.
Never know what could be the next big thing of course, but think about this; most in their early 20's that have never played a CD! CD's also seem to lack the cachet of cool that Vinyl possesses.
I've a sealed Japan made for US market CD longbox of the 2 track WYWH. Those of you who know the hobby will be mightily impressed. It might command 2-3K? But 15 years back probably 5-7K.
P.S. Recently I picked up about 50 former collectible CD's from a local shop for most of which on eBay 15 year ago would have run $50-100 each. Now they sit at $1.99-$2.99... The shop pays .10 to .25 per CD and only if Disk and artwork are in near perfect condition (think PSA9 at minimum) otherwise they have no space for the junk.
It's the singer not the song - Peter Townshend (1972)
It looks like the losing bidder on the last one might be in luck. Here's another one for half the price.

Barely had room to store my CDs back in the day. Cannot imagine saving the long boxes.
My truck still has a cassette player.
I can't remember who - would have to find them - but I bought and saved a country singer's CD because the title of her song was sexist - so they changed the album sleeve and song title? Otherwise, I never thought of saving the box.
great , something else for me to start collecting
I used to cut up the long boxes and tape the artwork on my bedroom wall. Mom wasn't too thrilled, but it looked cool.
