64 Topps Giants SP

I know that the Mays card is a SP, but it seems (from ebay) that there have been more Mays available than Koufax. Do the 64 Giants collectors feel the same?

Ngfred, it does seem that way although I'm not sure what accounts for that. It might be that the Koufax is usually found off center more often than the Mays and therefore there are a few less graded specimens available.
  • With both cards being short prints, and both guys having similar values, and both cards having similar levels of popularity, you would assume that equal numbers of both cards should have been sent in. When you see a Mays card, it is usually in pretty nice condition and nicely centered. When you see a Koufax, it tends to be in lesser condition and typically not well centered. The condition may be due to the fact that it is card number 3, and would have been subject to a bit more wear than cards in the middle of the stack. Less than perfect centering alone doesn't seem to keep people from sending Mays cards in, with 9.31% of all Mays cards sent in getting qualifiers of some type. This of course includes all types of qualifiers, but centering would be the most common. Only 3.95% of all Koufax cards sent in received a qualifier. Even if off-center I think people would still send them in because of the value like they do for Mays. On straight grades - Mays cards get 9's at a 10.29% rate, Koufax gets them at 7.89%. Mays get 8's at 34.8%, Koufax gets 8's at 34.87%. And ditto with 7's with Mays getting 7's at 34.8%, and Koufax getting 7's at 34.87%. Where Koufax beats Mays is Koufax gets 18.42% grades lower than a 7, while Mays gets 10.78%. This shows that condition is probably more of a factor than centering when deciding to send in a Koufax. The same goes with Skowron which has problems being the last card in the set, having 61.9% of all submissions getting a 7-8-9, compared with 95% for Friend, 90.57% for Stuart, 84.62% for Causey, and 86.96% for Cisco. The numbers dip a bit for Causey and Cisco because 13.46% of Causeys and 2.17% of Ciscos get qualifiers. There have been no qualifiers given out for Friend, Stuart, and Skowron.
  • Excellent analysis waitill!

Despite the differences in high grade, I think the individuals who own the Koufax in high grade are holding onto them. I haven't seen a 9 offered in some time.

  • I just had percentages above. Here are the actual numbers.

    3 - SANDY KOUFAX -2(3&4) - 4-(5) - 22-(6) - 53-(7) - 1-(7q) - 53-(8) - 4-(8q) - 12-(9) - 1-(9q) - Total-152
    51 - WILLIE MAYS - 1(3&4) - 2-(5) - 19-(6) - 71-(7) - 4-(7q) - 71-(8) - 12-(8q) - 21-(9) - 3-(9q) - Total-204

  • waitill - If I am reading your population numbers correctly, you list that there is a PSA 10 Koufax. There is no Koufax in PSA 10. I know there is a qualified 9 though.

Pinhigh, I think where he wrote "(10)" for both Koufax and Mays he meant "(9q)".
  • That was my thinking also Gemmint.

  • Thanks pinhigh, I forgot about those 9q's. I fixed the numbers above.
