1R is a lot cheaper but also a lot scarcer. You can look at Rudman's collection sold by Heritage for an idea if you haven't looked. I don't know how hard he tried, but it wasn't a lack of money.

Are you attempting to complete the series by die variety?

I've exchanged messages with Brad Yonaka and he was (and maybe still is) working on a Peru set by die variety.

I have no interest in that. I own duplicates of many dates with different varieties but it's a function of two things. There aren't other coins in the same price range I'd rather own and I buy what's available. Two, I bought a lower quality coin first but don't sell my duplicates because the proceeds aren't enough to motivate me to do it. I'd certainly never sell a coin I like at a loss to buy another coin I like less.

I will buy the JD and JM assayers for the 1755s and FRD and Charles III 1760, if I can find it, but not the others.

I think Mexico 1 reales would be a very fulfilling set, not easy by any means, but available with patience. I’ve thought about doing the same with the 2R Mexico pieces, but I’m already trying to do all the Peru and Bolivia minors (along with one of each 8R in XF+) as well as whatever Guatemala minors come my way. Add Bolivian republic and I’ll Never run out of stuff to collect! 😂

I don't own a Mexico 1R anymore. Well. not a really nice one.

I have it on my list but never had the coin budget for it. Always something else I wanted more or the price was too high.

I started with US coinage like most other US based collectors, but I like pillars more now and the US coinage of interest to me is a combination of too expensive financially and not as good a collectible value.

I consider pillar coinage comparable to Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, and Capped Bust, depending upon the specific comparison.

As examples, I'd rather own a Draped Bust LE dollar of equivalent quality to most Mexican 8R dates, but not for the price difference. OTOH, there are only a few half dollars I'd rather own versus any pillar 4R where the quality is close to comparable, even if the coins cost (roughly) the same price.

I never found collecting a series by date to be as interesting as collecting by type.

Those poor kitties at the shelter are going to be unhappy with you.

Reales will hardly ever be available, and when they are, they will be in groups, so opportunities to buy them will be few and far between.

In less than 2 years, you will be bored with them and they will be for sale.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to keep what you have for a while and don't make any hard and fast boundaries just yet. Get some experience with Spanish Colonial under your belt and buy what you like for now. You can always specialize later.
