He was a patron of my kid's elementary school and used to hang out there all the time, just giving the kids good life advice. Super friendly to everyone. Amazing guy. RIP.
Absolutely loved watching the guy. Just seemed like the coolest guy in the NLB during the 70s. Total badass legend.
RIP
back in my younger days playing Cadaco All Star Baseball; I always tried to pick Vida for in my starting rotation...
A little over two weeks ago I wrote him for a signature as I've been sending off rookie cards to get signed. I had also sent out some index cards with lyrics of a song titled "Vida Blue" by the band ALL. I had typed out the chorus for him to sign under: "Burn my world a southpaw curve, fast and hard like..." I was so excited for this return though it seems very unlikely.
I guess there is a slight chance he signed them before he passed as he seemed to get items back within a few weeks. He was just at the A's 1973 WS reunion too.

Was fun to watch. Condolences to his family.
I volunteer for a local 501c3 and about 10 years ago we had both Fergie Jenkins & Vida as guests for our annual golf tournament.
Of course I volunteered to pick them up/drop them off at the airport, etc., and on the ride back Fergie playfully mentioned to me "do you realize you have both 1971 Cy Young winners in your car?"
Fortunately I had an OMLB in my car left over from the tournament & asked them both to sign (which they graciously did):
