An 18-year-old Hillsboro man was killed Wednesday when his Ford Ranger pick-up collided head-on with a delivery truck on a remote area of Highway 6.

The accident occurred about 7:40 a.m. at milepost 13 west of Hillsboro when the deceased, Marcus Balmer, attempted to pass a semi-truck.

Police initially said one of his passengers, 17-year-old Brett Crandall, of Hillsboro, had also died. However, state troopers later said they had erred and Crandall remained alive and in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Medical Center.

Passenger Makala Blair, 15, and Jordan Connors, 17, both from Hillsboro, were also listed in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel.

The delivery truck driver, 31-year-old Steven Smith from Troutdale, received minor injuries and was transported to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, said Lt. Dale Rutledge, a spokesman for the Oregon State Police. Smith is a driver for Howard's Tavern Snacks, and his truck was carrying about 12,000 pounds of cargo.

Balmer was driving the Ford Ranger eastbound when it collided with the delivery truck, which tried unsuccessfully to dodge the oncoming vehicle.

The top and one side of the pick-up were mangled beyond recognition. Wheels and twisted metal were strewn across the roadway. The delivery truck was on its side.

State transportation crews rushed Wednesday morning to contain spilled diesel fuel from the wreckage.

It is unknown how much fuel poured out of the vehicles, said Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Shawn Uhlman.

Highway 6 was closed most of Wednesday morning before state transportation officials re-opened the road shortly before noon. But traffic delays were still lengthy.

  • Wow. Sorry to hear that man.
  • Sad news. I know that area. I used to live right next to Mt. Tabor and had friends that lived out that way.
