Just finished on eBay:

In case the link goes bad while the topic is still of interest, a 1975 #407 in 10, currently a pop 3/0 just sold for $3438. There are no records for this on APR, but this still seems like an insane amount. Is this not a common? I understand 3/0 is rare, but really not that rare. I guess I'm just trying to understand.

1975 Herb Washington PSA10 is a grail for some who love statistical anomalies. No shocker to me although I would have guessed about 1 grand less.
if there were 4-6 more of these in PSA 10 my guess is it would only command a couple of hundred.
Note the amount of career runs and stolen bases . Then note amount of at bats and plate appearances. No other career lines like that in the history of the game

Oh, I completely agree. By far the record number of games for someone with no plate appearances and no innings pitched, but last time a 10 traded, according to VCP, in 2019 it went for $202.50 and highest ever was $406.09, so I just assumed it would be regarded as a common (still?). Is that what medium/low pop commons go for now? What would the 1/0 Claudell Washington All-Star Rookie go for, then? I mean that must be a five figure card.
^ to a 1975 Registry collector I'd not be surprised if the Claudell was 2-4K.
Of course, do keep in mind the seller on the Herb W, so shenanigans always is possible!

Love the Hurricane Herb card! Topps used to sell a t-shirt of that card on their website.

Yes, but less likely with three different bidders over $2775.
Pop 3 for a regular sized 1975 Topps card is a super low pop. 3K doesnt surprise me for the set registry guys.
I'd pay 1K for a pop 5 PSA 9 1975 mini #16 Tanana or pop 3 PSA 9 #405 Montague that fills the holder.

I assumed the high price was due to Herbie graduating from the finest institution on the planet if not the universe . . .
LMAO....Go Bucks!!
That is a pretty big price for sure. Definitely shows the registry is far from dead like some people seem to believe. Check this one out. I realize it's a pop 1, but good god, it's still a common.

I was just saying to a friend that the White Sox should do that with Billy Hamilton this year(though Hamilton is a good defensive replacement too). He has come up and provided an instant spark pinch running in the late innings.
The '75 card is a beauty! I don't think Hamilton will ever have a card like that lol.
There's no doubt the yellow sanitary socks and the white spikes add to the card's eye appeal and also makes Herb appear a bit faster than he actually was.
Would be interesting to see if the $3k Herb Washington and $12k Buzz Capra make it into a Registry set. In the first decade of this forums, someone coined the phrase "The registry is a powerful drug." I think that poses true for these 2 purchases.

One of the changes MLB is considering is having a designated pinch runner for each team. The designated pinch runner could replace a player on base but would otherwise the player being replaced on base would stay in the batting lineup and in the field. The pinch runner could also be used again later in the game.
Being tested in the independent Atlantic League this year.
So there might be a future for Usain Bolt in MLB. Also Herb Washington would have lasted longer. And Billy Hamilton, etc.

Maybe the designed runner could also be permitted to ride a horse. Finally the announcers phrase "gets on his horse" could be a reality.
Never heard of Buzz before but respect on that 1974 season. A stat line like this today would be worth a contract of 8 figures a year.
5 shutouts for a middling team not bad!

That's got to be a floor if a Scioscia rookie ever comes back a 10.
But here's the thing. If you look closely, you'll see that Washington wasn't actually a very good baserunner. I've long thought him a cautionary tale for those who think speed is all it takes to run the bases well.
Also, interestingly, Washington's career, such as it was, gets dinged by a strange quirk in the rulebook that says if a player pinch runs (or hits) for the DH he, unlike any other position, immediately becomes the DH. So Washington has -3 RAA "added" to his total as a positional adjustment for the 31 games he "played" DH even though he was never so much announced as a hitter.
Hamilton, and to a lesser degree Terrance Gore, were real, if really bad offensively, baseball players. Heck, they hit better than all but about three pitchers.
True. Here's an example.

Should a PSA 10 of that card ever pop, I'd bet it would be up to twice that amount.

yeah Herb CS steal rate was higher than 50%. Well into negative value territory. All Finely's moronic idea

It'll be interesting to learn if the idea was moronic or just poorly executed if the Atlantic League rule gets adopted. I'm sure some GM would hire a sprinter if it only takes up a roster spot and doesn't even remove a Yasmani Grandal or a Josh Bell from the game.
I absolutely love the '76 Buzz Capra card.
I wonder if it is highest recorded amount paid for a 1976 Topps BaseBall card?
If a 1976 Topps G Brett ever scores a PSA10 my guess is it would go for 25K+

Herb Washington wasn't the first designated pinch runner for the 70's Athletics. Allan Lewis preceded him for a few years and actually had a season where he didn't have a plate appearance like Herb Washington.

He wasn't the last either as Matt Alexander and Don Hopkins fulfilled the designated runner after him.
