There are some recommendations based on recent various threads I have read.
There are reports of damage from big drops among all holder types. Of course it depends on the magnitude and direction of the force applied to the holder. I believe the holder will crack, not bend, which is how I believe they should be designed.
Keep the slabs flat instead of horizontal incase your storage container gets jostled.
Keep them out of sunlight.
Don't hang heavy objects near them if you live near earthquakes, have a home theater system like the local movie theater, or if you have bad luck.
There's a couple ideas I have regarding holders that I would love to bounce off the engineers who design them. It's quite possible the standard holders won't get much better than they are today but premium upgrade holders...the market has only been tapped for the labels...opportunities galore.
The first time a company makes a legit video to demonstrate the abuse a card inside their holder can sustain, without cheating, then you would likely see conversations taking place and potentially an uptick in business as long as they were a reputable grading company. I would want to see, or read in verification and test report, how the tests were conducted and what the results were.
It would be exciting to design an optional Paranoid Series Artifact holder upgrade.
Don't take them swimming.
Store them on the floor.
Good question!
Here's a couple of links to experiments done by a member here in the "old" days of PSA - Brucemo:

Have to say. There's been some creative threads done here over the years.
PS: for those who don't want to take the time to look? Here's the before and after of the paint shaker experiment:
Before:
After:
After looks pretty similar. The only difference I could notice, and possibly it was something on top of the holder, were a few white dots on his chin and jaw.
Impressive
Depends on how the card sits in the slab. Card that is slightly undersized or has a diamond cut might be susceptible to edge dings from the ends of bumpers.
Agree.
I'm surprised that Brucemo didn't mention this precisely. Tho, he did allude to it.
BTW. PSA can elect "not" to holder a diamond cut card (had it happen to me with a 68T card; I did a resub and got it holdered).
I'm surprised more people didn't find this topic interesting?
