Is it a new policy of eBay managed payments to put a Hold on larger transactions until buyer receives item ?

I recently sold a coin for $2200 and had no issues .I got $ in my account in 3 business days . Before buyer received the coin .

I now sold a coin for >2500 and was told by eBay rep that there is a "hold" until buyer receives coin .
The previous rep i called had said a "hold" meant it could take 30 days !
When i called back to reconfirm this a more knowledge agent aid it was because of the value and that once tracking # shows as item received by the buyer they would send out funds ( which takes another business day ) .

The seller gets paid upon proof of delivery.

It must be based on your activity history. I do not get holds even in $5000 payments

eBay holds can depend on your individual selling account (for example: being new or infrequent selling), or if they think there is an unusual amount of selling activity. I'm sure higher value items also trigger the "algorithms".

I sell about an item every other month or so on ebay, usually ~$200 sale, total feedback is <200. I just sold a gold centennial set for >$2500 and had the money in my bank account within 3 days of the sale. So I agree, there must be some algorithm or ranking tool to determine the hold.

I called a 3rd rep and still did not get a straight answer .
The rep said it had to do with the buyer and not me . That regardless if the buyer signs , receives item AND even left me good feedback , there would still be a 30 day hold .

I went back and re-read the eBay "You've been paid " Email . It did say ( At the bottom paragraph after shipping info ) there would be a 30 day hold on that payment received .

    I didn't say they weren't.

It may be your infrequent use, for example. Or the fact that you currently have 0% positive feedback because you have no feedback received in the last 12 months. It doesn't have to be anything nefarious, just due diligence on their part.

Something triggered a red flag in their algorithm . I saw a few youtube videos where other established ( so they claim) sellers are complaining about the same thing .
I made 2 sales this year .One was for $2,229.00 (3/21/23) and the other for $289.00 (2/13/23) but they did not leave feedback .
I will still be buying on eBay , but not selling .

how do you know it is not related to the buyer .... payment source or their history?

When it is related to the buyer, eBay tells you not to ship until it clears. [I've had it, but only 5 days. ]

Ebay would not tell you to ship and hold the funds just to have to release the funds on a seller guarantee when the buyer funds failed to clear.

Yes, I saw that. But it does say "0% positive" on your listing.

That's true . Feedback is no longer calculated on totality but instead on the last 12 months .

The 3rd rep i spoke to said it had nothing to do with me but with the buyer . Not sure if he might be a problematic buyer with too many returns or other claims .

I did not take the time to read the full Ebay "You've been paid" message .
I have gotten used to thinking the person paid , the $ is there, send item with tracking info ASAP .

This was written underneath the shipping address and instructions ............

The 3rd rep is incorrect. eBay does not tell you to ship to problematic buyers before fund clearance. They institute a hold and tell you to wait to ship.

I tend to agree with @jmlanzaf about it being due to infrequent use followed by a large sale. I wonder if that somehow resets after X amount of time of inactivity?

The buyer signed ( sent USPS Priority mail with Signature confirmation ) and picked up the coin yesterday ( 4/27/23 ) , left me good feedback and is happy .

    I call eBay today ( 4th time ) and spoke to 4th rep .

The issue is on my part . She said because i have not been selling as frequently as before and the value of the item it triggered an automatic 30 day hold on the funds . Really weird because my eBay store has been open/active consistently and i have been getting billed 21.95 every month for a couple of years now .

I also made a $2229.00 sale on 3/21/23 of another $20 Saint with out any issue (no payment holds ) at all . The rep said this started at the end of 2022 and supposedly on transaction greater than $1,000. I always believe only a fraction of what these reps tell me . Every other rep will tell you something slightly different . Smh .

The rep told me even though buyer received item ( tracking info posted on eBay site ) , left me good feedback there is till a 30 day hold . Even if i were to speak to her supervisor there is nothing supervisor could do since the hold was already in the system .

I closed my Ebay store and ended my listings . Will not be selling on eBay again .

I know many of you guys sell occasionally on Ebay as well so be aware this trigger can affect anyone on high value items and the hold of funds is 30 days or more .
