Nice items on Memory Lane Auction…

An item standing out to me is a 1962 Willie Mays PSA-8.5 . I led early…but dropped out with my tail between my legs at $20k. It currently stands at $50.5k. Will it hit $100k?

That 8.5 is nice but no, I dont think it'll hit 100K. Makes me think about that PSA 8 I should have picked up a PSA while back at a show when they were still mostly affordable.

I think it has a shot at $100k given the POP and player:

    PSA-10 (1)
    PSA-9 (9)
    PSA-8.5 (3)

A very difficult card to find in high end with the brown borders (PSA-8.5 or better). O/U is $100k.

That card has always been impossible. Don’t think the 8.5 hits $100K but we will see. The Frank Robinson is even harder. Still don’t have that one and not sure I ever will.

I remember seeing the 1962 Frank Robinson PSA-9 (POP 1) at a card show. Bill Goodwin was asking $5500😗Unfortunately…I passed…and now have the card in a PSA-8.

The PSA 10 1958 Frank Robinson sold for 230K via Memory Lane last spring and sold for less than half that last month, a reminder of just how volatile the market can be.

Especially for 10s. There's no established market for them in most cases for vintage.

    Gemint…

Good point that vintage 10s do not have a basis for value or at least little basis for value due to limited sales.

I would contend 8.5s are similar. You know value is somewhere between the value of an 8 and a 9 - but oftentimes there are so few 8.5s it is years between sales.

Or 9s with a low POP. How much would a 1962 Frank Robinson PSA-9 be worth…POP 1 w/none higher and no 8.5s? The lone PSA-9 sold on EBay about 20 years ago for $3300+!

For vintage, I generally find that 8.5's are worth about 1.25x the 8 price for stars and low pops. For common 8's that are readily available, I often find they sell for less than 8s. There are a number of set builders who want nothing to do with half grade cards.

The 1962 All-Star Mays in PSA 8 & PSA 8.5 just sold at the start 0f this month for $887 and $908 respectively. Not a huge difference there. Why don't collectors like the All-Star cards? I personally like the '61 Mays All-Star.
