I Have a 1940 penny that I found back in the 1970's that appears to have a silver coating/ cladding on it. It has a small rim abrasion on the back which is revealing what appears to be a yellow brass color. Did the mint experiment that early in the war years with alternate metal compositions? Or did someone just rub silver mercury on it and the copper reacted with the mercury. I have not weighed it or had any laser ablasion done on it. Any thoughts?

Plated/damaged.
A picture would help but it sounds like a high school experiment.
In any case it would not an error.
