I was wondering the status of the current coin market so far in 2023?

jkrkjkrk Posts: 986 ✭✭✭✭✭

Notably .. Double Eagles.

Auction prices ? Also coin shows? I'm picking a relatively small timeframe so I'm not sure it's meaningful? I never really want to get too far behind the curve.

I thought I saw a post that auction prices so far this year have tailed off slightly? correct or not?

I don't really know so I try to get some input as to how much buying to do and how aggressive I should be?

TY

Well at local show I setup at this one guy has 4 CAC DE been carrying around at least 6 mo. Considering he has not moved them….I dunno.

A big investor client bought some my slabbed AGB AGE last month…..plus a nice a $10 Pmg graded brownback NBN / so now loaded w buying cash:
I would like some nice common DE close to melt. Stack ‘em / make my case look nice - Don’t care if stickered or not just some nice looking lustrous pieces no spots - PCGS 63-64 not far from melt. I think get w whosaler who sells slabbed stuff bid plus 5 pct get w him b4 public comes in get some nice stuff… Show coming up. Then if gold spikes up…..

I'd say from my little corner of the world, (my house since I don't get out often and there are no shows near me) from what I have to bid to win a nice coin, the market seems to fine

Concerning Double Eagles, I thought the Fairmont auction at Stacks was quite strong.
I was hoping to leave with 4-5 and ended up with 2.
Of course the buyer’s that got the rest of ‘em probably thought the prices were just about right.😉

Still pretty strong, all gold is up simply because of metal content. Nice coins continue to set record prices. Possibly a little less exuberance than last summer but it's barely noticeable imo.

I am simply enjoying collecting what I like to collect. Coin shows and the "big picture" have little interest to me.

$20 DE's are about as strong now at $1980 gold than they were last couple of times gold hit $2070+ in 2020 and 2022. Premiums are up because the supply isn't there. Many retailers are consistently out of DE's (slabbed or not) and 90% silver. Slabbed 63 and 64 Saints now bringing 20-25% premiums on the wholesale markets. Even the XF's bring a 15% premium.

If some dealer hasn't been able to sell some slabbed 62's for 6 months then their pricing is whacked out. I see plenty of EBay sellers with slabbed 63/64 Saints at 30-50% premiums to spot.....and of course those won't sell except to uninformed newbies. Heritage will buy slabbed 63/64's sight-unseen "unspotted" for around 20% over spot. Doesn't make sense that we'd expect to find them "closer to melt." It's not fall 2018 anymore when gold was last at $1200.

I’m sure a lot of people would like to buy some PCGS MS63-64 double eagles “not far from melt”. For, as @roadrunner said, a number of dealers are paying roughly 20% over that amount.

That's where most of the majors are too. I picked up a few at a show yesterday myself.

Thanks for info. So 20% on melt and 10 to 15% on numismatic value, I have to choice 3 to 5 coins for sell.

I wish to thank everyone for their input.

I must be the least knowledgeable person on the boards. Add that to the fact that I can't grade and it's a wonder that my wife still let's me in the house?

Anyway, I will use my new found understanding of the market and formulate a plan going forward for our very tiny E-Bay store.

In the meantime, if it is raining out and someone sees a poor soul wandering around, in the rain, just mention PCGS to him and you'll know whether it's me.

    TY again

I went 0 for 3 in the recent Stack's auction. I bid over PCGS price guide for all.

YES Sir, good news for me, tomorrow I will contact them, I need a new Photo System from Ray Parkhurs. Do you has the link for the auction? Just to see which years was on bid? I have enough, 80% of the set.

Given your ability to spell and string together coherent sentences, I kinda doubt that. ;)

I'll only be in the rain... If my wife doesn't let me back in the house. LOL

I just got blown away on a 1913 $20, P63cac. PCGS guide is $3,750, CAC price guide is $4,500 in 63. The coin sold for 7k with bp. That being said, this coin looks like a 64 to me. Congrats to the winner if he/she reads this.

I want to put an 24, 25 and a 27 are 64.65 and 64. Hope enough for the high system. Those are low grades but clear coins. I will make a post with them to see if I need to re-grade.
PS: at one moment I wanted to put the 27-S 64 but better keep.

    Don’t feel bad Dan.
I got this crazy idea that a DE 1866-S No Motto AU 58 CAC might just could be snagged in the 60 range. After all one sold in November for around 75, but I don’t think it was CAC. Well I only missed it by the low 50s. So yeah, I think DEs are moving right along!

  • jkrkjkrk Posts: 986 ✭✭✭✭✭

Checked around a little bit & MS63's/4's do seem to indicate a 20-25% premium to gold. I knew the info I was reading was true, it just surprised me. If I can attain those prices I'm out of the E-Bay/selling/ generic gold biz. We have enough other junk DE's in our store to get by.

I truly was unaware of today's pricing. Luckily I only listed a few generics, one of which was a 3 lot of MS63's (on E-Bay) all (CAC) for $6800 on E-Bay when gold was $100 lower and no one seemed interested. Except for 1 astute person who bid $6000. Maybe the poor quality pix led most to move on? I used to complain about my wife's poor quality scans, but no longer. I now praise them. If anyone else is interested in learning how to show less than sharp pictures we'll teach you.

This led me to wonder whether we sell (E-Bay store) primarily to collectors or very small dealers? I always assumed collectors / one time buyers but what do I know?

Ty for updating me on the DE market. I do insist that I know less than almost anyone on the board. If you need confirmation... ask my wife.
