Miller Pa 570A / Rulau Pa-Ph-485

This is one of the long series of tokens struck to celebrate the 1876 U.S. Centennial. They were struck by Lingg & Co. of Philadelphia incorporating store card obverses and 17 different reverse dies (not all were used with each store card) featuring Philadelphia landmarks, patriotic themes (including a Libertas Americana die), a metamorphic die and others. Merchants as far west as St. louis ordered store cards for themselves but most issuers were from NYC, Philadelphia and the Mid-Atlantic area. The vast majority were struck in white metal and they came in two different sizes as well as one oval variety.

My late friend Arlie Slabaugh issued a small booklet cataloging the Lingg tokens and the listing was expanded by Russ Rulau in his United States Tokens catalog (see pages 577 & 578 for a more thorough discussion of the series).
