Regarding Bass Reaves, his story is currently streaming on TV via Paramount. Also, the CCAC submitted to the Treasury Secretary his name to be considered as one of the commemorative coin themes.
In the past I have mentioned that Jazz & Classical musicians
would make excellent numismatic subjects for medals &
coins. Apart form being popular in their time, they developed
personal style and art very much enjoyed to this day.
Just recently we had the Monnaie de Paris issue an
excellent tribute to Joséphine Baker - singer and Franco-American patriot.
The Royal mint as you are aware issued Paul McCartney
coins, and John Lennon is also due to be honored in '25,
who were both influenced by Lonnie Johnson.
Oscar Peterson was featured in Canadian numismatics.
Not surprisingly his idol was American pianist Art Tatum.
Also in years past Django Reinhardt was featured on a
Belgian coin, who started out playing the banjo. One of
his influences was Charlie Christian.
PBS has a great video today featuring "Elderly" Jazz musicians who
are still performing at, yes - Valerie Capers, age 90 ! I would
like to see the Mint take an interest in medals or coins featuring
jazz musicians, since this is an original American art form that
has charmed audiences worldwide, through some very difficult
periods in human history, the last century.
The humility and the joy of life in these musicians is inescapable
and inspiring. Many of them are still entertaining audiences around the country.
Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope the Mint picks up on this rich topic.
