Modern Finland Commemoratives...were they really melted

As a collector of music-related coins, I added a Finland KM-68 because of the harp. This was years ago. A few years later I read somewhere (possibly World Coin News???) that large quantities of the beautiful commemoratives issued by Finland were being melted. Does anyone know if this is true and what the reason for the melting was? Though I only have the KM-68, I found the contemporary designs to be beautiful but I had several collections already in progress and couldn't afford any of the coins that had escaped the smelter. Do we know how many were minted?
