Anyone remember when the Mariners used to bring their relief pitcher to the mound in a freaking boat.

Per Wikipedia (so probably wrong) it only lasted a week in 82 and never was really used.

I watch baseball so infrequently that I didn't realize that bullpen cars were reinstated a few years back under the guise of speeding up the game.

That is correct, supposedly the Mariners pitcher's didn't want any part of it, they were embarrassed by it. I must say, I'm impressed, you certainly do your research.
