"Peace" and "Indian Maiden" arrived today. Take care...
Major wardrobe malfunction!
Thanks. The engraving is stunning. It has taken a while to find these two copies.
How were those stamps actually used? I'm assuming that there must have been some USPOD form that was submitted when a mass mailing took place and that those stamps would be used to pay the postage charge. Am I correct?
How did mint copies of such high denomination stamps survive? Were they rendered obsolete at some point and then sold off to collectors?
As per my 1989 Scott Catalogue: "First issued in September, 1865, for prepayment of postage on bulk shipments of newspapers and periodicals. From 1875 on the stamps were affixed to memorandums of mailing, cancelled and retained by the post office. Discontinued on July 1, 1898".
I am thinking that after they were discontinued the stamps had no monetary value for what remained. Even in todays money you can ship quite a bit for $100.00.
My new interest...kind of like type collecting coins. Take care...
Very nice. Congrats!
