I will usually go for a VF coin over an AU even without cleaning or defect since I find the VF more attractive most of the time. Oh -until we get to AU58 with nice appeal- yes they do it for me. But 50 - 55 usually don't appeal to me and so if they had cleaning or defects, not at all my choice.

Problem free whatever. I try not to deal with problems. I have enough problems in my life.
Have you ever tried to sell a coin? Oh, it's not in a PCGS holder, Oh, there's no sticker, oh it's only a green sticker, oh, since it isn't a PCGS holder it has to be a black slab. Does it have monster toning? Collectors want EVERYTHING! They want every box checked! If you show a PCGS CAC coin, people will still pick the darn thing apart. It happens on the forums almost every day.
Now, you are considering intentionally introducing a problem coin into your life? Ummm, just say no! Say no and run away. Quality over quantity.
Fifteen years ago, this coin sold for around $350. There were 36 bids. Just sayin'.
What I noticed is that when I started collecting Morgans & Peace $s 20 years ago, there were almost no details coins for sale on EBAY. Maybe back then they all came back in body bags. Today for the semi & key dates they are all over EBAY, including some high dollar coins. Do they sell, not sure. But appears dealers are willing to slab or take a chance may come back net graded clean. Always wondered if there was some market for them.
I've always drawn the line when it comes to Details coins - I don't buy coins that have been intentionally messed with. And, I only buy Details coins from the 18th century or earlier. So, original VF for me or save my money for a higher grade.
“I would add that Details AU coins often strike me as overpriced. “
I whole heartedly agree with the overpriced statement. I have been looking for a ‘Genuine’ example to crack out and carry as a ‘pocket piece’ like when we were young.
These coins are expensive!
Are people buying these problem coins because they want this higher associated grade even though something’s wrong with it or are they buying it to crack out and wear it down with the full intentions of having a straight grade sometime down the road?
A problem coin will always be a problem coin and not desirable unless it’s rare and prohibitively expensive otherwise.

There has been some discussion of grey areas in grading. If it has a CAC, that's all I need to know.
There have been plenty of mistakes made on that front as well. However, on average, I do appreciate that second opinion. It can be most helpful.
This is probably what you are referring to. The technical grade is most likely correct and the coin has not been messed. However, it may not appeal to everyone....

If you are looking for the "best," there is always the risk your CAC coin is only a "B" coin.
Original problem free, hands down
