1981 Topps 2 week turnaround on special.....

I know this is brought up alot, but I must say Kudos on the turnaround time. Sent in 25 cards for the 80's special, left my house July 1st back to my house July 15th. Not bad considering the holiday weekend. All cards, 1981, came from a cello box I recently purchased. I'm putting the set together just for myself, but grades were tough. One 7, Seventeen 8's, & Four 9's. So much for "pack fresh".

  • Awesome! (The turn around time, not the grades). I just send mine yesterday. Thanks for the 80 special Update!
  • Congratulations on your quick turn around. You did much better than me. I sent 100 cards in on the sixty special which they have had since June 3rd and I still don't have them back. I have been in final verification for a week now. Sometimes PSA can really be a thorn in your side.

I found out from a rookie submitter who called in to ask a question or two that PSA seems to be very pickey on how cards are sent in.A while back on the Sports card memorabilia forum regular
veteran submitters suggested to pack and send in cards the way PSA asks on the websight.

The newbie guy called to just see what they would say, whoever he spoke to told him exactly what everyone here suggested to me here. The rep told him(something like) when cards are not sent in the way they ask they no longer become a priority to be graded.I'm going to guess it takes more time for them to properly open the package.

How did you send in your cards?
  • I send in hundreds of cards and I always submit right down to the letter. I have sent in fifty cards and then two weeks later send in 100 cards using the same service and the 100 submission beats the fifty back by three weeks. I was told by a friend that works there that it is like a crowd leaving a sold out game in an arena. Sometimes you slide through and sometimes you wait longer in line. To me not a very efficient or fair way for anyone. I have been on the other end of this where my cards have slid through and of course that is nice. I just think they need to get a uniform way of doing this that is fair to all of us. Then you could plan pretty close when your cards would be coming back to you.

  • There may be some truth to that. I do send the cards just like they ask, starting with the Card Saver II's wrapped in cardboard all the way to writing on the outside of the box what service I am requesting. Then sending insured with delivery confirmation. The one time I did not write the service on the outside of the box the order went the full duration. Coincidence, maybe?

FWIW. . .100 cards. . .all in Card Saver Is. . .two boxes with 50 cards each. . .then those two boxes in a larger box with packing to keep the two inner boxes from moving.

    Hypothesis:

They are fast with modern and slow with vintage.

    Any contrary data?

  • Do they really care if they are Card saver I or Card saver II?

no, but YOU WILL when they damage your card getting it in and out of the smaller II's

and if you dont use a card saver I then it is not guarenteed even if they do!

brucemo-Interesting observation. During the 1960's set special I sent in three invoices. One had 50 1960's cards, one had 10 1980's cards and one had 10 pre-war cards. The 10 1980's cards were graded within 3 days, the 1960's cards took 22 days and the pre-war cards took 25 days. This past month I sent in 5 1950's cards that were graded in 4 days and 50 1980's cards which were graded in 20 days.
It seems that they grade an entire invoice together. So the smaller the invoice the quicker the return. I would guess they have less people capable of grading vintage cards and thus it takes longer.
  • Use Card Saver Is instead of Card Saver IIs. They are slightly more expensive and harder to find, but well worth the extra money/effort.

I am sure that most new people that are hired have more experience grading modern cards. For that reason, I am sure they have more modern card graders so modern cards get graded faster. It also takes less time to grade modern cards which speeds up the process.

I also think that you are better sending in similar types of cards on the same invoice. Send all of your Bowman Chrome baseball in on one invoice and your 1976 Topps in on another. Also, if you are sending in something oddball (promos, odd-sized cards, etc.), be prepared for this to slow your invoice down.

It's pretty obvious too that the decade specials get moved through a lot quicker, so take advantage of this when available.

BigKid> I've probably sent in 750 or so cards over the last 18 months in Card Saver IIs and never had a problem. When I ran out of 2s, I did move to CS 1s but mostly because it was easier for me to insert and remove the card so I could examine prior to submission.

As always, your milage may vary.

  • After I submitted my cards at the last PSA Saturday, I asked for some more Card Saver II's and they gave me a free pack.
  • taka,

I hope you meant that PSA gave you cardsaver I's, not II's. I was at the last PSA Saturday also, and they make cardsaver I's, as well as a larger cardsaver (for oversized cards), very available for us to use. image
