  • The coins are all shady and my feelings are the seller is also.
I was to trusting now I am not. I cannot and will not allow this to happen again. I am buying slabbed coins or coins I can see in hand from now in. I will also look for dealers who are known to be honest for grading. I know there are plenty of them out there. No question about that. It's a matter of finding them. I have had enough bad experiences to now know there is no such things as a bargain.

Hard lesson learned. On the bright side, the knowledge gained from your experience has much value and you do have recourse through PayPal so not entirely a loss but rather a net gain from that perspective.

Could the 1898 be a proof? I just happened to look at a proof Morgan on eBay today and it has the same hammered look to the obverse.

Do you actually know the seller or is it just someone from Ebay that you were messaging with? Buying raw coins from anyone is a dangerous game. Unless you know what an original coin looks like from years and years of experience you are taking a huge gamble. You should view the coin in hand as well. Unless you are getting them for melt or slightly over the down side is huge. I have been back to collecting fairly heavily for over a dozen years and do not buy raw coins. Even with slabbed coins there is risk if you are not skilled at identifying problem coins.

This comes from me purchasing a lot of raw coins at the beginning and paying some tuition. Good luck and take to heart what these guys are saying. Most if not all are speaking from experience.
