Are You Waiting For The New Whitman Cherrypicker's Guide?

OAKSTAROAKSTAR Posts: 7,731 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm waiting. Sorry, I know this has been discussed in several other threads.

I'm just wondering what kind of percentage of the numismatic community and coin collecting hobby/world are waiting for or even care about this new upcoming Whitman Cherrypicker's Guide edition. Apparently, for whatever reason; this new edition is literally years behind schedule from it's original release date.

Are there any Whitman employees here on the board?

Does anyone here know who the go-to guy is to get legitimate up-to-date answers or an official statement/explanation on exactly what the problem is? It seems like a big secret or no one wants to talk about it or accept responsibility for whatever the hold-up is. A Whitman press release put out a generic/boilerplate nothing statement about a "potential" time frame.

Thanks for playing!

Dennis Tucker is the Whitman publisher on these forums and his user Id is Dentuck. There’s no reason to tag him. He made his official statement a few days back stating what books would be published in 2023. CPG was one of them. It’s several months out but it should happen this year. Another forum member is an advertiser in the new CPG and shared that the book would be released at a major coin show this year.

Okay. Well there you go. You have the latest and greatest info from Whitman. I doubt they will be offering daily or weekly updates.

For many Johnny-come-lately folks, they think the book has been delayed for the last couple of years. That’s not true. I advised on the book in 2015! I still have the emails. So this is the 8th year the book has been “worked on.” I learned long ago not to hold my breath and would advise the same. I sincerely hope it comes out this year to great success.

That said and from what I know, I suspect there will be varieties included in the book that should not be and there will be varieties left out of the book that should be in there. This is not new. I suspect a lot of this is decided on based on what the writers own. This flawed system causes more issues because much of what is included in the PCGS complete variety sets is based on the content of this book. It should not work like this. It should be based on significant varieties known. CONECA / Variety Vista is a better source of what is significant and it has the ability to be updated any day…not every 10+ years when a book comes out.

Well, it's the latest but hardly the greatest. Like I said; it's a generic/boilerplate statement.

So you're saying the book has not been delayed?.... Okay.

Agreed! It's a continues and on-going work in progress. It will never be complete. By the time it goes to printing and hits the streets, it will be out dated by other discoveries and previously unknown facts. It just seems like (from the Johnny-come-lately's), that someone in authority needs to make a command decision and get on with it.

I am saying it has not been delayed by a couple of years. It has been delayed for something closer to seven years. As for the statement about "by the time it goes to print"....no it is already insufficient, well before it even goes to print. Many quality varieties are being left out of the book and some varieties making the book should not be in there. The system/book/complete variety registries are broken.

Fine, so it's insufficient BEFORE it goes to printing. Which validates my point even more.

Fine, the system/book/complete variety registries are broken. That's not my point. My point is: Get the book out already!
