*1976 Walter Payton RC--to crack and resubmit or to crossover--that is the question.

What would you do with this beautiful 1976 Topps Walter Payton RC? I believe it is primed for a grade bump, but I am unsure if I should retry with SGC (if they even consider upgrades upon review?), or if I should crack it out or crossover to PSA or another grading company. All thoughts are appreciated on the grade and/or suggestions for crossing it over.

Stunner of a card. Looks like an 8.5 here (left corners have whispers) and the TB centering could be a hair better... Regardless, you have almost zero bleed and the yellows are almost perfectly registered. Personally, I'd keep it just like it is. It's safe and IN YOUR HANDS, Lol. If it's a pure value-move, 100% crack it neatly and send it to PSA raw. SGC will NOT bump a card as often as PSA. PSA is fair and will bump a card if they feel it merits it on review.
Again, an absolute blazer of a card!

I would leave it in the case. SGC has gained some clout in the last two years. Looks like an nice card, but probably would not be a 8 for PSA. So if it's a PSA 7 is that better than a SGC 8, is your question.

The card is certainly not a PSA NM 7. NM 7 show obvious touches &/or lesser centering. PSA doesn't grade any more harshly than SGC. In fact, my career GPA is considerably higher with PSA--and that's thousands of cards to each company.
I'm not saying PSA is too lenient, either. The thing is; SGC has what I call "Star-Itis". The bigger the name, the harder they scrutinize. My favorite was my '77 Bench. It was bought off eBay about 20 years ago. SGC 88. I couldn't figure what I was missing. So, I cracked it out to inspect it. The thing looked like a perfectly registered "tiffany". The back was 75/25 and the front was virtually perfect. The corners were pack-fresh daggers. Just a mystery card. I tossed it into a bulk sub and it was given a PSA 10. PSA, with fresh eyes, saw the card exactly as I did. Grading??? You never know!

Nice card! I would keep is as it is in that SGC 8 holder.

Really sweet Payton! Have you looked at it with a loop or similar device to check for any small blemishes, etc...? If it looks clean I would attempt a crack & cross to PSA. To be clear I usually only attempt this on more expensive cards that jump in price each grade like your Payton. I had a nice hit on a Griffey Junior card bumping from a PSA 9 to PSA 10. While I have had success I have also had some busts. For example I tried 3 times each on expensive Doctor J and Jerry Rice rookies and didn't succeed. But that was about 5 years ago and I will probably try again, specifically on the Doctor J.

As a young kid, like 7 years old when we shot hoops we would yell out Doctor J when we made a nice shot. I couldn't shoot very good but later in life I could dunk almost as well as the Doctor! j/k :D

Can you post a nice Doc and an....in your opinion a "less attractive" one? I'm curious what your favorite/least favorite might be.

Oh I wish, I don't think I have any basketball photos of me when I was 7. I found one when I was like 12.

Leave it alone, there is a tilt to it and it seems to have some yellow showing in his name. Seems fairly graded, tough, but fair.

I've spent 5k in grading fees by convincing myself "that card is certainly not a PSA 7". :) Most of the time I've been wrong.

But, it sure looks like an 8 to me, Nice card!

If PC, I’d leave it. It looks nice. If reselling…crack/sub.

    Thanks,

The top to bottom centering will prevent it from bumping. It's a nice card though. Good luck whatever you do with it.

  • looking at the back, it looks like it has a stilt or even a slight miscut as it looks like it flares at the top. great card, that would be my main concern based on my experience
