Russell Wilson Strange But True

HydrantHydrant Posts: 7,773 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was at the Rams/Broncos game yesterday and the most odd thing happened. And no, it wasn't that the Rams scored 51 points. It was this; I literally did not recognize that Wilson was the Broncos QB. LITERALLY! First off, I thought Wilson was #6. The QB was #3 so I thought it was someone else. Second, I wear earplugs at the game so basically I can't hear the PA system announcer. And third, I never look at the giant big screen to watch the replays. Anyway, from the start of the game I wondered who that lousy QB was. It was one of the worst QB performances that I have ever seen. Where did they dig this guy up?.......Then,....during the 4th quarter, I asked the guy next to me, "Is Wilson on the team?". He said, "He's the QB." Then I said, "I know he's a QB, but is he on the sidelines? Is he suited up?". And then, the shocker! The guy says, " No that's him on the field right now. He's been in the whole game.". I couldn't believe it!......Russell Wilson isn't even a shadow of his former self. He has lost all of his razzle dazzle moves. His footwork is clumsy. His passing is so-so. He did make one good TD pass but it was a giveaway, late in the game. He is an embarrassment. He needs to hang it up......And, I must say that in years past he was my favorite QB to watch. Yesterday,.... I LITERALLY did not recognize him. It's sad. He needs to retire.

I was reading an article about Russell Wilson just this morning, I think the article was written back in October, very interesting. The article says Wilson was much more successful when he scrambled and ran, but apparently he didn't like that style of play and that was one of the main reasons he left Seattle. He now wants to play like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and be a pocket passer, but it isn't working.

Here’s What’s Holding Back Russell Wilson With the Broncos
The former Seahawks quarterback wants to play like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

    WTF is wrong with Russ?

This is my opinion, and one I expressed in the Oct. 10 MMQB column after talking to a bunch of people who worked with Russell Wilson in Seattle—I think there’s a way you have to deploy Wilson to get the most out of him as a player. And I know some people are convinced that Wilson doesn’t want to be deployed the way he was in Seattle, which was one source of friction between the player and the team over his last few years playing for the Seahawks.

When the Seahawks tried opening up the offense and having Wilson play the position from the pocket in the dropback game, it really didn’t work. Conversely, when the Seahawks used Wilson as a runner and ran hard play-action and moved the pocket, they got him playing fast and created open spaces for him to throw.

Which is to say for all the talk about Wilson proving that height doesn’t matter, it actually does, even with him at 5'11". There have been times over the years when he’s come back to the sideline and, asked by coaches why he missed a receiver over the middle, the answer was, “Because I couldn’t see him.” You can even see it now, where a lot of his biggest plays the past few weeks have come when he’s been on the move.

Wilson’s struggles in Denver has been one of the biggest story lines of the NFL season.

I understand why Wilson would want to play the game like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. But if that’s not what you are as a player, for better and for worse, then it doesn’t help anyone to keep shoving a square peg into a round hole. So, again, in my opinion, the Broncos need to find a way to separate Wilson from his desire to play a certain way and do what’s best for Denver, which is to incorporate what Wilson did best when he grew into one of the NFL’s most valuable players in Seattle.

The hard thing about it, I’m sure, would be conceding the Seahawks were right. But I think the faster it happens, the better the Broncos will be. And I 100% believe Nathaniel Hackett has plenty in his bag to get it done.

Dragon Master, I think you might be on to something BIG here. Yesterday he played like a pocket passer and he's no good at it.
Anyway, yesterday before the game I was enjoying a pregame cold one at the SoFi patio bar with Secret Inside Source.

Secret Inside Source told me that a lot of Wilson's success was due to Pete Carroll's coaching. The two of them came to loggerheads about Wilson's desire to change his style. Carroll was against it so that is why the Seahawks let him go. Wilson got his wish in Denver..... The result?.... DISASTER!

In other " Inside Football" news, my Secret Inside Source told me that Kliff Kingsbury wants out as the Cardinals head coach because management "Keeps shoving Kyler Murray down his throat." Kingsbury has no confidence in Murray. He doesn't think Murray is any good and it makes him look bad as the head coach. It's a sinking ship.....Kingsbury wants out.

    Sorry, Galaxico.....

I bet all of Colorado wishes they could fire him along with Hackett and about a dozen players who quit Sunday. 51 points to a Rams team playing 2nd and 3rd stringers because of injuries. Baker Mayfield made to look like Johnny Unitas second coming. Ackers and Higbee combined for 250 yards and 5 touchdowns.

It's crazy, while the Broncos are horrible, on the flip side the Packers seem to be getting better all of a sudden, just sayin.

I could say more,....but 2dueces summed it up better than I could. To highlight what dueces said,.....The main frustrations among the Broncos is that the Rams played 2nd and 3rd stringers and scored 51 POINTS!... AND.....The Rams played Cam Akers at RB who the Rams want to dump.....Akers looked like a super star yesterday!... AND....BAKER!.....He was phenomenal!......Everyone thinks he's washed up! That had to hurt!....AND...the consensus in the league is that the Rams are the worst team in the NFL!......I agreed, ...until yesterday.......I'll add this though.... The fighting among the Broncos players on the sidelines during the game spilled over into the locker room after the game....The reason for all the pushing and shoving was this;....After Wilson got sacked for the third time (on three consecutive plays?) when the offense came off the field, the Broncos backup QB told the offensive line that they needed to protect Wilson better, according to Secret Inside Source,.....THEN?......All Hell broke lose.....The offensive line players began to PHYSICALLY ATTACK THE BACKUP QB!!......TOTAL BREAKDOWN!

But one more thing. Tyler Higbee is the most underrated and unknown player in the NFL. I don't just think it, I know it, he's the best tight end in the NFL.....Ask the Broncos..... I think they would agree....

You know, I can't place my finger on it, but Russell Wilson has been very bizarre this season, his poor play, the weird Subway commercials, and even his appearance. Just look at this photo of him on the sidelines at yesterday's Rams game.

I told my daughter to take Higbee as a 2nd TE. We drafted Kittle 3rd, 1. Allen, 2. Cook because TE’s have killed her 2 years in a row. We had Higbee in Flex 35 points and Kittle 30. We had Ackers on the bench, ugh. But she only needs 11 total points to win and she’s has 4.Williams and 5. Pittman tonight. I’m hoping they can manage 5.5 a piece for her to move on to the Championship 3 years in a row.

On top of all the discord Gregory who acted like a lot b…. Was suspended for conduct unbecoming for one game for a fight after the game with a Ram. The Broncos are a total s… show. Don’t say I didn’t see it coming because right after the Broncos traded away their future I put a $250 future under 10 wins.

2dueces, Kittle or Higbee. It's a toss up. Cooper Kupp got all the attention last year and well deserved. But Higbee helped Kupp rack up the big numbers because Higbee draws a LOT of defensive attention. .....Higbee is a very good player. Has been for years...A hidden treasure.

And Pete Carroll, God bless him, he's having a better season than Wilson is having, but he'll never live down that bone head call in the Super Bowl.

Wilson has been truly awful this season. He looks completely lost in the Broncos offense. He never seems to take the easy play, so many check downs and QB scrambles were available yesterday and he didn't take any of them. I think Metcalf and Lockett apparently masked quite a bit of Wilson's deficiencies the last few years.

It has been a weird season watching Brady, Rodgers, and Wilson all sucking so badly. Brady only seems to play well in the last 8 minutes of the game when they revert to their 2 minute offense. Rodgers has been slightly off all year. Wilson has been one of the 3 or 4 worst QBs in the NFL. The crazy thing is Wilson has like $250 million left on his extension and is basically untradeable until 2026.

It takes Kelce about 7 games to get 600 yards. 😛

Now that the broncos have fired their high school coach the team should start heading in the rite direction and the offense should start to improve !!!!!

Go with the hot hand in fantasy. This year Higbee hasn’t been healthy and the Rams didn’t find him until recently. I’m not saying Higbee is near the class of Kelse, no one is even close.

Don't forget the week before where BM went 16.6 for QBR with a thrashing by Green Bay and a whopping 12 points earned. He can have a good game from time to time but he is going to be a middle of the road starting qb over a season at best. Is that what LA fans want to have lead their team? Wouldn't they rather have oh, elite, like an Allen, Mahomes? I'd be out there looking for the next elite qb in the draft if I were Rams management. Could be worse though, look at the Bronco qb's for over a decade. They keep going for washed up ex-starters over and over again.

Edited to add: BM is still LAST in QBR (27) amongst qualified qb's for the season combining Carolina and LA work. Yup go with that Rams.

Spacey, As I have posted before, I know virtually nothing about Baker before he came to the Rams. Except he played for a terrible team in Cleveland and then the Panthers (the Rams even beat the Panthers this season), and he made TV commercials. So, I guess I'm missing the really important stuff.. ...as in, why are so many people down on him? It's almost like people want him to fail. I have never known anything like it. So much hostility directed at an athlete. Why!....
O.K., I have a theory.... Maybe his on field performance in the past was affected by all the negativity directed towards him. Whatever, In his 2 games in L.A. the fans were cheering excitedly for him all the time and even after the games....BAKER! BAKER! BAKER! ....and, he's looked fantastic! Maybe he just needed to feel wanted.....Maybe?.....Time will tell. I hope the best for him.
And, as I said before..... He has brought happiness and joy to the Rams fans in an otherwise dreary season....He is the only bright spot.....O.k., just 2 games....but what A fabulous 2 games!
    I Don't Get It...

P.S. The Lovely Mrs. Hydrant™ just got a call from headquarters. She tells me that Head Coach McVay is very happy with Baker....they get along good together.....and.....That the coaching staff in Cleveland never liked him on a personal basis.....And then she said, "Coaching is very important...... Everyone has to get along.".......That about sums it up......
I think the Rams are going to stick with Baker......
Maybe some people will be eating crow......

    Only Time Will Tell.....

I hear ya Mr. H, but hear ye hear ye here is MHO. I don't want him to fail (well only a little it is pretty clear he thinks very highly of himself and lets everyone know it), but I know that he will fail because he does, over and over again with an occasional success. He was over-hyped from the onset in terms of being an elite NFL style qb, team don't matter, you have IT or your don't - ball don't lie (my fav line from 'Sheed Wallace). And neither do the stats. Goff was far better, too bad they traded him for Stafford but one could say it paid off with an SB win for one year. But you never know, BM could surprise us all and get better, we will see.

If I were Rams management, I would be looking for someone potentially elite, someone who hunkers down and works, is poised on the field, has humility. Oh wait, that lad Purdy, now that is who I would want as my qb...............

    Best, SH
