What were some rules that were made to avoid making a mockery/travesty of the sport?

In MLB, this is probably by far the most infamous example, where Germany Schaefer twice (at least) after reaching second base, stole first base to set up a double steal "do over" so to speak:

For basketball I guess the shot clock rule first comes to mind though I am puzzled why the NCAA put it off for another three decades until Dean Smith's "Four Corners Offense" (or more like NO offense) forced their hand:

As for football, that I'm not sure about, maybe that whole offense intentionally fumbling the ball forwards towards the goal?

Don't take steroids. It makes a mockery/travesty of the sport.
Speaking of which, basketball is a mockery/travesty of a sport. Want to fix it? Every foul results in a free throw for the team fouled, and then the team that was fouled gets the ball. When you see the head coach of a team yelling at the officials because they didn't call a foul on that coach's team, you are not watching a sport, you are watching a mockery of a sport. And I say "you", because "I" would rather watch a Hallmark movie than a basketball game.
Or rather,.....basketball today is a mockery/travesty of the sport it once was?
Either way I agree with you, Dallas.
I'm not sure if there is an "embellishment" rule in soccer or not? I'm not a soccer expert, but whenever I watch a soccer match it seems like it's common place to see a player flailing to the ground after being barely brushed against. If there's not a rule for this then maybe there should be?
I hear you, but watching grown men act like 4 year old girls is the single only entertaining thing in a soccer game, so they can't take that away.
Talking of soccer, it's beyond stupid that the only one in the stadium who knows how much time is left s the referee. Also that an important game, and I'm willing to concede that the final game of the World Cup might be important, can be decided in a completely different way than the rest of the game was. Like instead of extra innings in baseball's post season they replaced the stupid "ghost runner" rule with a home run derby.
I watched the World Cup for the first time this year and I did not like the whole penalty kick thing at the end of extra time. I would rather see sudden death OT. Next goal wins.
Matt
It's gotta at least be better than the way American/gridiron football did it...
OTOH, when Kentucky had to go into OT to beat #1 Louisiana State several years back I thought the way they do OT in college football was interesting...it was done like innings in baseball (each team gets at least one possession) and on the third extra inning, eh I mean OT period, you MUST go for two after a touchdown.

I shudder to think what Bob Costas and his fellow traditionalists thought of THAT...I mean we're talking about the guy who hates the wild card...

This is more along the lines of fixing a "game breaking" bug (to use a video gaming term) but how originally George Mikan could just stand near the opposing basket and was tall enough to just swat opponents' shots away from the basket. Before George came along it wasn't thought this was even possible but this could've ruined the game almost as easily as stalling/freezing the ball so along came the defensive goal tending rule. Then when Wilt Chamberlain came along he did the opposite...stand near the basket, take passes and just stuff them in. Hence the offensive goaltending rule.
And a more recent example of a rule change to avoid making a confusing travesty in football...
