as much as i miss the crowd here
i'll make a new years resolution to jump back in the mix here

so IAN did make this set a collection sale
so it's easy to link it now
fingers crossed i can get him to do color images or 4 image listings
as toners on his site without 4 images...well it's not good for the consignee

here's a cherry from this set....i named this one the "green mamba "
as the green is deadly to the eyes.....once seen it's to die for

I would be interesting in hearing from you the story behind you choosing to put together your toned 1950-1964 proof set; and the details of your 15 year project to put together this set (raw purchases that you had graded; purchase of already slabbed coins; where you found the coins [i.e. B&M Shops, Coin Shows, other collectors, online] and what your favorites are.

So if you have the time, post a reply that tells your story.

    THANK YOU ALL
as i rest easier knowing the circle here
i'll converse better in depth over on the registry board
"SHOUT OUT TO TOMMY" for doing that for me

fingers crossed with my sales as much as i un der stand IAN's position on not using trueviews
i almost shed a tear over not having 4 image listings

this was one of my favorites with a short story behind it
when one engages a set....you quickly learn the hard to find holes to fill
wingedliberty1957 and i embarked after keyman64 suggested we do this set
wingedliberty1957 back in the day quickly noticed the 1958 lincoln was the beast to find
currently U A HOGS 1960 leads this registry set with toners
as one has to set aside top position when up against cam/dcam competitors

it was discovered 2 hard to find quality toners were in the jeffersons
the 1955 & 1953 were beasts to secure
it was only like 2 years ago i found a 53' set that a gem in
with fingers crossed as getting toners straight graded can be a chore
i got this graded.....pricey....it goes with the hobby as they say

this is but one of what i saw to be a prize and quest achieved
    ian's 2 image shot
    versus pcgs trueview
i really hope ian pulls through and does color shots for my set
    the trueview

So if you have the time, post a reply that tells your story.

    so back in the day
keyman64 started a set to add a focus to his passion with building a set
there was/is a toning crowd or select group here.....
robec is and has always been in the top throne THE TONER KING...my dear friend and buddy
keyman64 invited wingedliberty1957 & me to join him in a quest
to do this 1950-1964 set with a focus on toning
setting aside ever being able to compete with cam/dcams

for the most part wingedliberty1957 and i engaged in full stride
a snapshot in our lives we'll always cherish
it was fun to see what he had going to use as a reference or standard
my 1956 quarter in this set came from him
the neon lemonade toned 1961 rosey is a coin i bought raw i had graded
it ended up in his set as a gift as we horse traded some
but as soon as he sold his set i pounced on it as it's so incredible in hand

my pursuit was mostly ebay but anywhere online i could find
raw or already graded to buying sets just for 1 coin and paying up for coins that said buy me !!!
many of these coins on this quest found me going through pcgs staff changes
some graders could see natural toning while others can be stubborn about such things
my 1960 franklin i cut out of mint packaging and sent it in 4 times to get it graded
it's such an amazing soft pastel thing of beauty....to me beauty out paces a coins grade #
i always carried what our belated/loved russ told us....if the grade doesn't fit we must submit
russ was the 1st person i went offline with and he screened/subbed coins for me when i 1st got into pcgs
so this set was like that movie the money pit but a beautiful quest
none of these coins come from edynamic or toning factories
i did my best to achieve a balance knowing i'd always be in wingedliberty1957's shadow
but i was proud to be on his heels
enjoy and happy new years to all

    lasvegasteddy.

Thanks for the information and story. Sound likes you had a great time putting together your toned set of proofs.

I hope your sale turns out great for you.

I am doing the same thing. Last year I purchased from a dealer some 1954-1960 proof sets that had been stored in Wayte Raymond Albums for decades. The deal I bought them from purchased them from a collector who had purchased the proofs sets directly from the mint.

The coins in the Wayte Raymond albums had toned very nicely on both sides (except for some reasons the nickels had developed little, if any toning). Earlier this year I submitted the half dollars for grading. They turned out great. At the September Long Beach show I submitted the cents, dimes and quarters for grading and Trueview photos. I expect that these coins will be graded next month or in earlier February. Should be fun to see the results and the photos.

These coins are the beginning of my own project of assembling a toned 1950-1964 set for proofs.

Attached are two photos of a 1956 Type 1 half and a 1956 Type 2 half. Both are gorgeous.

very nice matching franklins there sanctionll
for whatever reason the jeffersons do add
extra challenge to the quest in the earlier 1950's

so here's one of those favorites in my set
as these monochromatic proofs or single hue ....well they're just special
this one i called PAPA SMURF

another cherry of this set right here

    happy new years everyone
i wish the best for all

to bump this thread as i've 1 week left on GC on the 1st part of my sale

    so with this set
there is the KING in the 1950 proof franklin
when i was assembling this set i did alot of monitoring of "other images" or coinfact images
    on price guide
it's always in the back of my mind that some coins are private or not even in pcgs holders
but i ponied up for the king back in the day
and never looked back as it's still sports quite a throne in coinfact comparisons
never been to CAC or tried to have it grade upgraded...it's a stunner....enjoy

thanks for the compliment and great to hear from you too
but yeah you inspired more then you'll ever know wingedliberty1957

so here's another showcase as the 1st part of my IRS sale heads towards ending
this set was such a quest and as i matured with it
i kicked many coins out due to being AT....i think i got down to like 4 or 5 that are/could be AT
this represents the last KDL coin i had
many know KDL as they were jaw droppers out of utah mostly ikes brought them fame
here's a franklin like it or not that has an amazing rev....it just pops

I am surprised how different the GC pics are compared to the TruViews on these proofs. I will have to win a couple to see which are more representative of coin in hand.

it's like a light bulb was out on images on IAN's site
i respect his stance on "no trueviews" coupled with his reason
i did my best to get his color images or more then 2 image auctions
to be included but it wasn't happening
    c'est la vie
i always insisted that pcgs image my proofs for " patina color " versus contrast or " cameo type " imaging
phil arnold shot most of this set
any who buy these if not aware of trueviews will have dropped jaws once in hand with the lights on
of note that 61 lemon drop rosey dime wingedliberty1957 held for awhile
we both know how an electric lemonade proof can be in hand even though green is touted as the money color
that dime needs no light or special angle to pop

i bump today with one of the jeffersons
this 56 has to be in the top 5 of electric neon type examples

I think you possibly messed up in your registry set removal. You should have just retired it so it would be available to see forever, rather than remove items from your set. The one I have gotten so for is also still in your inventory but removed from your set.

This cert is currently in the Set Registry inventory of lasvegasteddy and is featured in one or more sets, including lasvegasteddy.

i credit this awesome group of members for inspiring me

tuesday morning bump for the last 1/2 here
this was an ex ngc that down graded when set raw but something about
these single hue based examples are amazing
especially when found on early dates
shame it wasn't full coverage as it's a pretty powder blue that glows
i loved the fact george wore a blue coat fighting the red coats

    Wednesdays day bump

so my set did include a couple that were in terminal stage of toning
and i know many don't like it
i built my set with diversity in mind so it was important to include some
of my terminal examples this in the last 1/2 that ends this sunday
i saw that streaky area above the date as is it was a meteor but the reverse
the reverse to me was of plate coin type example
of how amazing terminal toning can be as it like glows
    anyways thank you all

    hey sanction
my target of estimation has been surpassed in a good way
sales like this have a balance to them and it's good to see the coin market faring well
    STILL

to the last days of the final 1/2 i'll bump with this
this kennedy was always a special one to me
it's as if a aqua blue automotive anti-freeze covers the surface
truly sweet these opalescent toners can be with neon attributes
it's not noted as being toned but simply put it's a toner that displayed opalescent toning for my set
and one of the only coins that took to GC scanning ?

    of note too
any who do puzzle over GC images to PCGS images can look at my 1950 proof franklin
it has 3 images.....1)GC scanned.....2)GC color shot.....3)PCGS trueview linked to cert as all my coins
while the majority are only GC scanned

    is one of them
bold green toning on silver just works
i definitely ponied up for it in an old ngc fatty only to see the pcgs downgrade

It's been a long time, Teddy. I hope you and family are doing well. I picked up the 1962 Half. Most people have no appreciation for the time and work that goes into putting a set like this together. I am not looking to do the set all over again but every now and then I pick up a distraction. I was able to land the 1951 Quarter (Blue Coat) and the 1961 Quarter (Green Mamba). Tried pretty hard for that 1962 Franklin but Keyman's pockets were deeper than mine this time.

Beautiful set, and I am proud to have been able to acquire a piece of it.

my set had a core price guide value of $4.6k
final result came in at gross $12,275 and net of $11,420
this should aide in any questions how the coin market is faring as well as
insight to toning premium and how i did
some dropped my jaw-others went cheap which i was happy to see too
of them all some one got the king of the set CHEAP....it is in one of best toning found with a core value of $1k
that sold for $700...major congrats to that person...i paid $1.3 k back in the day
i only needed some $5k for the IRS ( i know tar & feathers are cheaper) and $2k for general stuff
I KNOW IT'S GREATLY ATTRIBUTED TO THIS BOARDS HELP
    THANK YOU

greg...of note...man am i swamped in life with 2 grandkids now
most consuming is studying the stock market on trader level (the coins i can buy if i can get this right )
one company's balance sheet locked me in
(well over 200 subsidiaries/affiliates/irish inversion that includes many foreign jurisdictions)
following them through a chapter 11's is a consuming undertow (mega case/multi billion/complex solvent distressed)
so i've been buried deep in doing case studies on ch11( learning legalese/processes is challenging to comprehend )
i simply want to learn for myself so i know things on a deep comprehensive level
time management is what it is
congrats on that frankie...back in the day we'd laugh at what it traded for today
of note a solid blue 2 sided set can now be pulled off....very unique opportunity there

kirk...of my washies to me you adopted the cream of the cream in those and i know
the green mamba once in hand...that green is deadly when it strikes you...just so pretty in hand
george in blue coat...in perspective that one wowed me as single hues are tough in early dates
and blue fits him so well

    catbert.....congrats on the 50 washie

i do plan on dropping in in the main board in short order
but definitely wanted to close this out

everything in life is but merely on loan to us by our appreciation....lose your appreciation and see

Thanks Teddy. I think your referencing the 1950 half dollar, which I was shocked on its price as well (happened to pick that one up as well). I wonder how much of the set went to board members? I have a package coming from great collections today, so excited to see what all was purchased!
