LAdude, please read...

There was a poll on ESPN and it asked what closer you would rather have in to close a game for your team and guess who was the top choice? You guessed it...the next Dennis Eckersley...John Smoltz! image Eric Gagne was 3rd by the way...Just thought I'd point that out to you...imageimage

D-Can you give me some stats on Smoltz? Like his age, career wins-losses, career era, and all that schtuff? Smoltz had Tommy john surgery right? PLMK about him, since I don't pay attention to most Atlanta pitchers image
  • well, right now it would be hard to argue to with the poll BUT Eric Gagne is only in his 2nd year, not even in his prime yet. Gagne definately has the potentiel to be the best closer ever! I'de rather have Gagne on tyhe dodgers then smoltz just because he has abut 12 more years then smoltz. I cant see the dodgers trading or not resigning gagne, but i can see smoltz retiring within the next couple years.

LaDude, that's why Smoltzie has the experience. He's only 34 years old. In 1996 the guy was 24 games and won the Cy Young and has always been consistent throughout his career. I'm not bashing Gagne or anything because he's awesome, and I actually like the guy...but I'd take Smoltz over him not because I'm a Braves fan...it's because he has that experience and he knows what to do out there to get batters out and get the save.

    Yanksfan...here's Smoltz's career stats...

W L ERA G GS CG SHO SV SVO IP H R ER HR HBP BB SO
    161 118 3.37 437 361 47 14 42 --- 2523.0 2186 1034 944 206 40 800 2212

  • Gagne is having one good year. I'm not doubting that he can do it for the rest of his career, he certainly had the hype, but he's still got alot to prove to be compared with a guy like Smoltz. Gange was this >< close to being an Expo last year too, but the GM who got fired, can't think of his name right now, backed out right before the call to the commisioners office to approve the deal image.

I agree. Smoltz might be cutting it for the HOF but with the career he's had so far, I think he might be deserving, especially if he keeps this pace up ala Dennis Eckersley. They've already compared him to Dennis...which is a big compliment. I like Gagne, but like Chad said, he has a lot to prove to be compared with Smoltzie. image

btw, Chad, if the Expos happen to be contracted next season...where do you think all those players will go? And, if not, what city will they go to? Just wondering what you think...
  • gagne is having a better year then smoltz right now, out of 35 tries he has 33 saves! thats awesome, he was the fastest player to get to 30.

I dunno, I'm guessing they'd do a dispersal draft and Vladdy would end up in Tampa Bay if they can pay his $8 Million salary. But I'm sure they'd make room for him image. Vazquez could go to a team like Texas who needs pitching bad and will finish low in the overall standings, Vidro also in Texas. Imagine Vidro and A-Rod, nice combo there. I'd expect Barrett or Wilkerson to go next, with most of our top notch prospects gone. Ron Calloway would go early too. Barrett would be a great fit for Atlanta, he's from there, and Javy Lopez isn't gettin any younger. And if they moved, Washington, D.C. or somewhere in VA.
