Best = Photoshop
It's what I use.
.
i accomplish such things with the basic and free Photo Gallery that comes with several versions of windows. (square crop only but it is FAST) i THINK it can only be obtained through a silverlight download file? been using it for years but i do use paint.net and photoscape for specific technical stuff. regular paint (not the newest form that comes with win10) is still VERY useful
here is a snapshot of the photo gallery version i'm referring to and it has a default option to save a backup of any edited images that can be set to be deleted after certain amounts of time/days/weeks etc.
edited to add:
you have to click on edit, organize etc to get to the edit function:
Best bang for the buck is Affinity Photo.
Photoshop - subscription is $130 per year...... You will probably also want to switch to a digital camera, macro lens, copy stand to get the best pics. Depending on your product is the cost justified?
GIMP is free, and well acclaimed. Has probably all the features you would want.
have been using ACDsee for years. However, not happy with all their upgrades....
am shopping around...
Lunapic, it's a free online editing software so the downside is you cant use it offline, but it has everything you could possibly want for the purposes you mention, and there are many features I have never had occasion to use, one really nice thing about it is that it has circle crop
