I saw this on the internet today. A couple in the UK was doing a kitchen remodel and found a stash of 264 400 year old gold coins under the sub floor they were tearing up. Final Spinks auction tally was about £7.5 million pounds. Should be enough to cover the kitchen remodel and maybe enough left over for a new washer/dryer
I love these stories from the UK - I guess it was common to bury your money 400 years ago (and then forget about it). I think I’m going to tear up my house and see what’s under it.

Correction: looks like the original story had the decimal point in the wrong spot now it’s only about 1 million dollars worth. Still not a bad haul
Couple of old threads about these coins:

And the coins aren't "400 year old", they're "not quite 300 years old". That's an important distinction, because gold coins found in England that have been lost for over 300 years old belong to the Crown, not to the finder. But since the youngest coin in the hoard was 292 years, that means the coins had to have been lost for no more than 292 years, and so the hoard was not deemed to be a "treasure trove" under English law.
True, some of the coins are 400 years old or more; but it's the youngest coin the hoard that is important, for dating purposes.
There wouldn't have been a Spink auction for these coins, if they'd waited another eight years to renovate their kitchen.
