The mark in front of Ms. Liberty's eye on the obverse and under the right segment of the scroll on the reverse appear to be the same, which makes me think this is just a single coin with before and after "conservation" shots.
The before shots make it appear to be an AU with natural, though undesirable, toning. The after shots make it appear to be an AU with dullish and stripped surfaces. I'd pass either way. This is the generic issue in the series.
1, although too dark for me. Never dip black toning, has eaten into coin surface and those halos will appear if dipped. Trying to remove by over-dipping only makes it worse.
I don't mind the dipped result too much but I see what folks are saying about the consequences and would want to see it in hand to see how it looks. Tough coin, really not a winnable situation here.

Considering I see the same markings to the right of the face and by the star they are the same coin. I assume this is a preserved coin?
If the first pictures was natural toning I'd go for that but what I assume is the cleaned/preserved version looks... Well... Clean and crisp!

Same coin pre and post dipping. How is the luster after the dip?
Same coin?
Love Coin #1.
Coin #2 has that icky unnatural 'dipped' look. Not for me.

I agree with the above and I much prefer the first coin!

this woulda made a great poll !
First coin. Second one now has a cleaned look to it. You can see a halo around a few of the stars.
Pass as it looks retoned in the top pic now dipped in the lower pic this has been double boinked.

State #1 at least concelaed the previous wipe/cleaning...

Wow, the large font response again. Not sure why since I do not touch any of the icons.
The large font happens if you start a line with # .
Example:
1 large ...
Yep just tested in the test forum and that's what happened. Thanks wont do that again.
Both versions of the same coin are undesirable to me.

1 for me.

I wonder if a weak or diluted dip would've lightened the toning without stripping it down to bare metal?
Same coin, a couple of contact marks appear in the same spots.
Prefer Coin 1.

I like it better in the first set of images. Looks more natural, and I like the look of the reverse.
TB it and it will look a lot better after the tan comes back.
Hoard the keys.
Just to be different, #2
BHNC #203
How can you “like one coin more” just to be different? Choosing it, just to be different isn't the same as liking it more.

I hope TB refers to Taco Bell and not Tuberculosis!
Although, darker. I prefer coin #1 (before conservation).

Oh, a trick question ?
I'd flip it in the $400-$500 range with the caveat: "cleanliness is next to godliness". Beware: you must like it !
Thread title ought to read " Before & After ".
In essence, every coin is searching for its rightful caretaker.
i like the first one (the second one looks decent, fwiw)
I too like the first one more.
Most of the time, I would prefer original toning/tarnishing to cleaning/restoration (unless of course it is done properly and doesn't show).
