How To Contact Someone About A Coin In Their Private Registry Inventory

TomBTomB Posts: 21,569 ✭✭✭✭✭

This may be an odd request, or then again perhaps there is a simple answer that I have not found.

There is a coin listed on the PCGS cert verification page as being in a user's private registry inventory and I would like to reach out to this person about perhaps acquiring the coin. It's not a rare coin and it's not a valuable coin and it's not a conditionally scarce coin. It's just a relatively low value coin ($200? $300?) that I purchased raw as part of a set about two decades ago and then had certified by PCGS and eventually sold. Since then, it has been re-certified (and no doubt regraded) at least three times, but I did some quick research and found what I believe is the current PCGS TrueView for the piece and the current cert number. Of course, it is in a private registry inventory.

Is there some way I can reach out to this person to inquire about the coin? I'd imagine since it is in a "private" inventory that the answer is that I cannot do so, but I thought some on the boards might have good ideas for me. Thank you for any help!

Can you leave a comment on the set?

if it is in private inventory, it may not be in a set, but a duplicate

check the 5 coins with cert numbers before and after to see if any of them are in registry sets
see if any of those have contact info

Thank you both for your thoughtful suggestions.

@leothelyon, the coin is not listed in a set, but rather in the inventory of someone. So, I can't leave a comment on the set.

@davewesen, the idea to check out the coins immediately before and after this one was something I never thought of. It turns out that several coins on either side of this cert number are of the same series as this coin and all show up as in a private registry inventory. So, I can't check out any sets they might be in and can't reach out to the person who has them, but they look like they would have been sent in together.

Thank you both for the suggestions, but I will have to continue to search for methods.

how about a "want to buy" on the BST for the type, date, grade, plastic (cert number optional) ... you never know who may respond. advertise your desire to find the coin of interest.

I also have tried to do this. The only way I found is to go through every set that the coin could be in and then search every set for the coin. You can't do it on dark sets, so you might not find it.
    Good luck

@alaura22, thank you for the suggestion, but the coin is listed as in a private inventory and is not listed as being in any set. This should mean that I cannot find it by going through listed sets.

I'm sure the people who run the registry could tell you but I'm quite positive they won't.

I think any method you can identify is going to be a longshot.

Like another person mentioned, post a want to buy thread on the bst. It’s unlikely to work but there is a small chance if that person or someone they know is here on the forums.

I agree, @BryceM that PCGS might be able to help, but also agree that it might be a slippery slope for them and that they would likely not want to go that direction.

The idea of a BST thread such as @U1chicago and @calgolddiver have posted is a possibility, but I don't want to publicly badger someone into selling a coin to me. Rather, I would prefer to reach out privately, which is why I have posted so few details here, and then see if they are willing to sell the piece.

    Thank you all.

You could buy a majority share in Collectors Universe, take control of PCGS, and then go and check the records.

Hard to do now that they're privately owned. :/

It may not be in a set, but it could be in a set owners gallery. The set gallery wouldn’t have it but the owners gallery may. That gallery contains all the inventory belonging to the owner as long as there are photos.

Maybe PCGS looks at akin to the military. If you are hunting a military member for a reasonable purpose, and explain this purpose, while they will not give you the member's contact info they will contact the member and inform them that you are trying to contact them and give them your contact info. If they contact you fine and if not fine, the military is finished with the situation. A chance. Good luck.

I won’t be of any help but can only confirm it is somehow possible. I have received an inquiry via email (which I ignored). I didn’t wonder until right now about how they got my contact info.

Doesn't HA have the anonymous "make offer to owner" button?
