Trey Lance is getting shredded
Wow, the critics are really ripping into Trey Lance.
Why Former Coaches are So Eager to Criticize Trey Lance
Typically, people reserve judgment about young quarterbacks for a least a year or two. Not for Lance.
Never has an NFL quarterback faced more criticism after just three career starts than Trey Lance. It's the strangest thing.
Typically, people reserve judgment about young quarterbacks for a least a year or two. But for Lance, who's 22, so many analysts are so eager to label him a bust already, and some of those analysts are former NFL coaches.
Super Bowl champion Mike Martz recently said this about Lance: "I've never liked him. I still don't like him. I'd like to know what he does so well, because he's not a great passer, doesn't have good skills, takes a long time to set himself and throw the football, misses easy throws and he's not a particularly good runner. Other than that, he's a hell of a player."
What a mean thing to say from someone who probably hasn't watched more than five minutes of Lance's highlights.
Then there's Super Bowl champion Sean Payton, who recently said this: "I think—and I believe this, don't kid yourself—I think at some point, we're going to see (Jimmy) Garoppolo back in that lineup."
All because Lance lost one game in the pouring rain. Ridiculous.
It's possible these coaches simply don't like Lance. It's also possible they have subconscious, ulterior motives when they criticize him, because when they criticize Lance, they really are criticizing Kyle Shanahan without saying it. They essentially are saying Shanahan made a huge mistake trading up for Lance. He whiffed. Made an error in judgment. Couldn't coach up the kid.
Coaches can be extremely petty. Both Martz and Payton were once considered geniuses and the smartest offensive coaches in the world, and each won a Super Bowl. Now, most people consider Kyle Shanahan the top offensive mind in football. But he hasn't won a Super Bowl yet.
Perhaps they resent him, and they're taking their resentment out on Lance.
Just a theory.

Let's give the kid a chance outside a road game in a monsoon
Well sometimes talent at the NFL level is obvious, sometimes someone can work into it. Recently for example, Herbert came in when Taylor the starter got his lung punctured and could not play (he is now suing the Bolts for that) a couple games into his rookie year and it was like 'oh, okay then, this guy is something isn't he'? So sometimes it is not like that, maybe Lance can work into it.......
After this season it will be interesting to see the trajectory of the "Big Five" taken in round one of the 2021 draft:
Trevor Lawrence
Zach Wilson
Trey Lance
Justin Fields
Mac Jones
Last season Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields seemed to receive the most criticism, Zach Wilson wasn't mentioned much, Mac Jones had praise heaped on him and I don't think I saw Trey Lance play. After 5-6 games this year we should have a better idea of where these young QB's are going, week one didn't show much. That 1983 draft probably won't be surpassed by this bunch, despite all the hype they got as the draft approached.
Fixed that for you. Edited to note that Mills was 3rd round, but, played up to the others last year, so belongs in the group IMO.
Who wrote this article? He's really going out on a limb for Lance.
Also, I thought this thread would be about Lance doing 'curls for the girls'.
49ers beat writer Grant Cohn wrote the article, I personally think perkdog is right, you can't judge the guy from one road game in a monsoon, it's ridiculous.
Well he suffered an ankle injury in todays game, had an air cast applied, and carted off the field - so no more negative reviews for awhile...............
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
Hopefully it isn't too serious
Jimmy G. is back,....right where he belongs.......Watch the Niners!......Super Bowl?....... Jimmy vs. Josh!!!!!
..
Out for season
Horrible news, I feel bad for the guy.
that was an ugly injury. I feel bad for Trey. he will basically be a rookie at the start of his 3rd season.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
In some ways that can be good, especially if he is in need of development, it might prolong his career
You gotta feel bad for this kid, right when he's ready to fully take over as the starting QB he goes down for the year. Tough break,no pun intended.
Sucks for Jimmy G too in a sense, he restructured his contract to take about 20M paycut to stick around as the backup then five quarters into the season he's taking over as the starter. Luckily, he's playing for his next contract and the 49ers can't tag him in 2023 so playing well in 2022 could pay off for him bigtime next offseason.

Turns out to be serious sadly. Gives Jimmy a 2nd chance but no one wants that and niner fans wanted to see what they had in Lance this year.
Yeah that is crappy news, hopefully he does well.in recovery
Did JimmyG take a pay cut or just 'restructure' his contract by taking money in subsequent years?
