France 1870 A

A well defined crusty look... Anyone else see the influence on Barber 22 years later? Actually this was not the first time this was used

    That's beautiful. How do the trueviews compare to the look in hand?

    I like that design and that is some thick skin! Like @neildrobertson I wonder how it looks in hand - let us know.

    I have one on its way to me as well - these are more rare than I would have thought. And yes, amazing how much this looks like a Morgan dollar or Barber design.

    Terrific image by the PCGS photography team- it is difficult to capture the iridescent color. Wonderful look in hand especially when tilting which brings out the look.

    @Bob13

    Exceptional coin. Based solely on the images, I think your example graded higher than mine. Congrats

    Nice examples... I believe that design first appeared at the concours of designs for the new coinage when the Second Republic was created in 1848 - check those out for some further beautiful designs. This one ended up winning and featured on the coinage from 1849 to 1851 before being replaced by Louis Napoleon. Barber and Morgan were certainly influenced by it, as Weinman was by the Semeuse design of 1898 when designing the Walking Liberty.

    @Bjorn - thanks for the info.

    I also came across this article:

    And yes, I like the Ceres and Semeuse designs... especially when they have a little color.
