Cancelling auctions with less than 24 hrs left

I was winning an auction with less than 24 hours left, and woke up the next morning to find it cancelled. My max bid I had on it was right along the line with comps on the card ($150), and I was winning the auction when I last checked. Seriously, someone cancelled an auction over a card being down 10%-12%. The card has since then been relisted on ebay. Seller has 100% feedback with over 1000 transactions. I might try again to win the card again, but I'm not sure I want to deal with this pop tart seller. Thoughts?

You were going to pay $150 for a pop tart? Was it the frosted brown sugar cinnamon parallel?
I believe a seller can end an auction up to 12 hours before the end. However, I'm pretty sure they are charged a final value fee of the high bid at the time the auction is ended.
If they were charged a final value fee then it really made no sense for them to cancel the auction. They just ate up some of their profit on relisting. Plus I have perfect feedback, so it wasn't like I was some zero feedback buyer.
A lot of sellers will end an auction if they dont feel the bidding is high enough going into the final day.
Don't take it personally. There are many reasons a seller might cancel. And yes they take a hit. I've had to do it when someone pointed out an error in my listing, for instance.
My thought is that I wouldn't want to do business with that seller under any circumstances.
I agree with not wanting to do business with them, but part of me wants to try and win the card for a lower bid this time, and see if they cancel again.
He probably sold it somewhere else and cancelled the auction because he didn't have the card to sell anymore. Regardless, the seller paid ebay a final value fee based on the price when he cancelled it.
No, he re-listed it on ebay like 3 days later. I probably won't bid again, but I am following the auction to see what he sells it for.
I seem to see it happening more and more. Seems like I get a cancellation noted about once per week these days. I don't even bid on that many items either.
Lots of characters on ebay and you never know why people do what they do and it's pointless to try and figure it out.

I completely understand that. I just think it shows that your seller lacks integrity and I'd prefer not to do business with people like that. Not even for the possibility he might rip you off. YMMV.
This is not the way to do business, but it is allowed by ebay and they get their cut at the end of the day. Seeing this more and more now as there are more platforms folks are using when selling. You can easily sell an item at the same in facebook, myslab, ebay, IG, and etc.
If you're going to do that, you shouldn't use an auction. Anyway, the key is that this clown relisted the item three days later. That removes most of the gray area.
I'm sure Ebay could care less. They got their money. Personally, the seller is just delusional just like 99% of ebay prices. Daltex, totally agree with you that he should just have a buy it now listing. Yes this card was close to $200 6-12 months ago. However, now the seller has to sell the card for $170 just to recoup his final value fees. My max bid was $154. The auction probably would have reached that if he let it play out, since it was at $138 already. I'm a high school history teacher who teaches Civics and Economics. This guy must have been absent for the econ portion of the class, because he certainly doesn't understand markets, nor does he understand ebay's agreement of cancelling an auction that is costing him money. Finally, the auction said it was ended because of an error in the listing, yet nothing in the description of the item was changed in the new auction. Also, just in case you were wondering why I have all this time to talk, and play detective on this auction instead of teaching, my students gave me the gift of Covid. Anyway, since this thread has traction, and I'm done with all my grading, I'll let everyone know what happens with the auction when it closes in 2 days.
