Honoring the Queen of International Coinage

The life of Queen Elizabeth II was extraordinary. She lived 96 years and served as the queen of Great Britain, its commonwealths, and its political associations since she acceded to the throne in 1952. According to Guinness World Records, Queen Elizabeth II appeared on coins and currencies from at least 45 nations – the most countries to ever feature the same individual.

Her long life is numismatically depicted not just on countless issues struck by mints around the world but also in portraits that reflected the queen as she gracefully aged from her youthful 20s, into her midlife, and then into her golden years. British coinage has evolved over the decades to honor the queen during five eras in her life as queen, including her first portrait in 1953, her second appearing on British coins beginning in 1968, the third in 1985, the fourth introduced in 1998, and her fifth and final numismatic likeness introduced in 2015.
