Customs question

A bit OT maybe but does anyone have experience ordering from UK to California and whatever customs does?
I haven't ordered from overseas before.
Seller states that eBay figures it out on the payment section. But he's not sure about whether additional customs fees show up when it gets here.
Thanks,

I have bought from the UK, but coins less than £270, I see the mail comes with a Custom Declaration CN 22 form on the box or envelope. with Royal Mail.
No idea what takes for gifts or goods above that £270 number and btw, so far the deliver timing have been no more than 7 days.

edit: I should mentioned, in my case is buying directly on a website no ebay.
If they are on eBay's Global Shipping Programme, all the fees are covered (in the very high GSP fee).
I once paid about $270 fee but DHL told me that's not duty fee but rather processing fee. The package also from Royal Mint.
GSP automatically adds any fees and tariffs too the total at checkout

Well SO FAR the transaction had added cost of about 10%.
Now as long as the mailman doesn't show up with the FBI (NSA ?) United Nations? that appears to be the charge.
Yes, it's no fun, but hey.....this is coin collecting.
For collector coins, there should be no Customs fees when arriving into USA. I get several packages a month from Canada, UK, Australia, etc. - all with no fees. My only issue is the slow service. Still waiting on a package that arrived in LA on 8/20 from Aus to be released.
Bullion or other objects may be different.
