Anyone here experienced with grading sports cards?

1northcoin1northcoin Posts: 4,263 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just came across a rookie card set that I had forgotten that I had acquired back when Michael Jordan was still with the Chicago Bulls. Maybe I should try for a regrade of the past graded Mint 9.

I see there is today the option of a 9.5. Anyone have experience with submitting sports cards for upgrades?
(Not sure if 9.5 was even an option decades ago.)

PSA Introduces Half Grades for Trading Cards
After carefully considering significant changes in the trading card marketplace and listening to the requests of hobbyists, Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) will implement a new half-point precision grading system effective February 1, 2008. The familiar 1 through 10 PSA grading scale will now also include a half-point grade from 1.5 through 8.5.
    .
Orlando pointed out there are now huge differences in values between PSA 7, 8 and 9; in some cases, literally thousands of dollars.
“For example, if a 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax rookie card in PSA NM-MT 8 is currently worth about $2,200 and a PSA Mint 9 is worth approximately $18,000-plus, there should be a card that falls somewhere in between those two numbers,” explained Orlando who also is Editor of Sports Market Report, a monthly price guide.

PSA will add a half-point grade within each of the 1 to 10 numbers with the exception of a 9.5 grade.

“We felt it was not necessary to add a third Mint grade since PSA already has a Mint 9 and Gem Mint 10 grade as part of the current scale. For the first time, this new system will also help separate cards that are graded Poor or Fair since the previous scale combined those two grades at the same PSA 1 level. This can result in a significant difference in value if the card in question is a T206 Honus Wagner or a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle.”

Since it got a 9 with oc highly doubtful it could jump .5 but who knows these days with grading.
You can submit it at crossover so you dont lose the 9 or roll the dice and submit raw.

    Very helpful. Thanks,

I am aware of a 9.5 listing. Curious if this was subsequently added.

You could submit and ask for no qualifier but it would likely come back as a straight 7. Qualifiers (OC, MC, etc.) are usually knocked down 2 grades when determining value.

I doubt that will remain graded as an 8 in view of the centering issue.

I am a card guy but just getting my feet wet with coins and currency. There is no 9.5 with PSA. Maybe with other grading companies but I am not sure. Even if there was a 9.5 I would not resubmit the Jordan sticker. It has a oc qualifier and it would not bump or with the new standards get a lower grade.
The regular Jordan rookie is worth getting graded for at least authenticity reasons. It is much easier to sell a graded one compared to one that buyers might feel is counterfeit. Even if you are not going to sell it now, you may decide to later. I would grade it now as they may raise their grading prices later and if you do decide to sell it in a few years, it would already be graded.
    Best of Luck,

Though I have graded nearly a thousand cards in the past few years, 1980's basketball is out of my circle of competence.

The centering on the slabbed card kills the value despite the grade.

It would be a waste of time and money to grade.

There is a website that broke down several ways to determine if the Fleer is genuine.

    I would search those PUP's.

I sure the experts on the other section could quickly determine such as well...

There is no upside to resubmitting. There is no such thing as a 10(OC) so it’s at the top of the mark now.

Agree with Downtown. The PSA 9 OC Jordan sticker is in an old holder and is your best case scenario with that card so I would leave that card as is. If it doesn't get the OC qualifier, it would likely get a straight 7 at best.

There is no 9.5 grade with PSA.

The raw Jordan card is a beater, likely a PSA 2 at best, but even a 1 is about an $1800 card with a 2 running around 2K+ and worth submitting to get holdered by PSA.
