eBay FVF - Holy cow!!

RaufusRaufus Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hi Folks,

I've been out of the game for a bit.

I am seeing that the final value fees on ebay are not nearly 13%. Just curious, when did they go up so high??

Last I sold they were far less, though there was a PayPal fee as well. Did they just raise the FVF as there is no PP fee now? Even with no PP fee, this his higher then I recall it being. IIRC, just a few years back the FVF was in the 6 or so % range. Incredible.

Thanks for any info.

I wonder what the exact cost is per eyeball ;)

  • I believe eBay’s FVF had been 10% for a long time. PayPal’s fee was about 3.3%. But since the removal of PayPal from the equation, eBay absorbed their fee and now charge 13+%

I wonder how many of the eyeballs are worth any cost? Seriously, you know that the number of eyeballs is only part of the equation.

I am only concerned about eyeballs, that is what I am paying for.

I view eBay as a giant super inexpensive advertising platform. If I sell a coin there, all the better.

I’m sure lots of other sellers view eBay the same way, but many others actually try to sell there. And for those who do, the number of eyeballs isn’t the most important consideration.

eBay is great for advertising and can be good for buyers. As a casual seller it’s no bargain. I can consign to an auction house with roughly the same fees and they do all the work. If I’m selling raw coins or junk that’s a different story.

Most of the coins I sell are on eBay or from an eBay lead.

The comment right after you mentioned "I can consign to an auction house with roughly the same fees and they do all the work." and my response is they are promoting their auction and not your coin business. For roughly the same price and some labor, I can get better photos, the same net amount, and My Business is being promoted and not the auction house.

I think we agree with one another. For someone like you with a coin business eBay is great but for someone like me who casually sells coins there are better alternatives.

    This.

Ebay fees have actually gone DOWN in recent years. With a store, you pay 8.7% all in. It used to be at least 6% + 3% and PayPal is now 3.5%.

You can sell bullion for 4 %.

With top rated seller discount, you can even knock 10% off that number.

I dare you to consign bullion for 4%.

And with a store, the coins are 8.7%. There is no auction house under 10%.

From what I gather though, expensive coins ($10,000 ++) do not sell quickly on ebay ; and that consigning them to an auction house may be the best way to go.

Your question is too general to answer. When you say $10,000++ in coins what do you mean? 1 $10,000 coin, 10 $1,000 coins or 5000 $2 coins. Where the best place to sell the coins depends on your answer.

You could use Great Collections; they will charge a small listing fee, but no sellers fee if the coin sells for over $1000.
The other option is to try to negotiate a negative sellers fee with either Stacks or Heritage, however 1 $10,000 may not be a big enough deal for them.

With a 10% sellers fee you would get 90% of the hammer price.
With a negative 10% sellers fee you would get 110% of the hammer price.

If your stuff is easy to sell the $30 or so store fee may be worth opening it then closing it when you are done. Also you get around $25 toward shipping supplies a quarter.

With an ebay store as others have mentioned, 5 to 10 percent depending on bullion VS coin as well as sale prices, and potentially getting thousands of eyeballs potentially interesting in bidding or buying, it's really not that bad of a deal. As a one off or a few here and there the 13% can feel a bit steep at times... But again you are opening the door to a lot of real and potential traffic!
