Attributing FS-801 1967 Halves - Which is Which?
When perusing CoinFacts for 1967 half dollar varieties, particularly the FS-801, I noticed this interesting abnormality with some coins. The first thing that pops out to you on the FS-801 PCGS plate coin is the obvious die marks under WE and to the left of the 6. Here's a picture of one of the MS65 plate coins on CoinFacts:
When I went to the regular coin page to hone in on some grading points, I came across a MS66 with no attribution, yet it had the die markers. Wanting to see which set that coin was in, I went to the verification page and found it WAS attributed, yet as "Minor Variety". An image:
My question is now which is which? Is the second coin misattributed or the first one? It is interesting to note that the Variety Vista page makes no mention of these die marks, and I count at least two different die pairs amongst the FS-801 CoinFacts coins. A link to that page is here: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1967-50c-ddr-fs-801/391391
These die markers would be a great help for attribution, though this would need to be sorted out first. The varieties are so very similar among 1967 DDRs that an in hand determination would likely be needed. Is it just luck based on what the grader sees on that day? Any ideas?
