Just curious, and cannot find this info anywhere.

When were the following discovered?
Were their discoveries numismatic news that reached the general public?
Were they collectible and have value?

1916/16
1918/7 D
1937 D 3 Leg

BST: KindaNewish (3/21/21), WQuarterFreddie (3/30/21), Meltdown (4/6/21), DBSTrader2 (5/5/21) AKA- unclemonkey on Blow Out

Don't know. I started working at Coin World's Collectors Clearinghouse Dept. in 1974 and they were all well known then.

You might find somebody with a year set of Redbooks and look to see when each one was first listed.

    1918/7 D...

Okay PCGS says it was first discovered around 1930 in an auction with more examples coming up for sale in the 1940's.

    Found on the web:

    1916/16 Doubled Die Obverse.
The principal distributed report of this Mint mistake came in the July 1962 issue of The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine.

    You beat me yos.
I went to Lange's book and read the same. Listed just to validate that this was the first legitimate variety and still not sure when and who actually found it and had it validated as a variety.
    Jim

The first published report of this variety (FS-1916-101) appeared in The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine for July 1962, when an example was submitted by Herbert S. Perlin of Pomona, California.

Also from David Lange's book regarding the 1918/7 D Buff is the following excerpt:

    • There appears to be no mention of this variety until an example appeared in a March
15, 1930 auction conducted by The Hobby Shop (dealer Paul M. Lange of Rochester,
New York, no relation to the author). Little interest was shown at the time, and it was
not until later in the decade, when collecting Buffalo Nickels by date and mint really

Again in Mr. Lange's book the following was mentioned in regard to the 37D 3 legged Buff:
    Jim

This variety was evidently discovered by, or at least first publicized by, C. L. “Cowboy” Franzen. He was advertising them for sale in The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine as early as 1937-38.
