It’s never been a “World” series.
It’s the AL vs NL. None of the rest of
the world participates.
Why trophies for both leagues too ?
The NFL, NBA, and NHL only give one trophy per person for the entire league.
Does the NCAA give the Heisman to each conference best player ?
MLB is the everyone gets a trophy league. Give one batting champ. One gold glove per position. One Cy Young. Why both leagues and not just one ?

Part of it was because the leagues didn't play each other during the regular season, so it made sense to give 'best of each league' awards and batting titles etc.
However, they did just give one Cy Young early on in the awards history.
Now it is so steeped in tradition with awarding one to each league that it probably won't change even though there is inter-league play now.
World Series was simply a hyperbolic name and the United States was ahead of the rest of the world in participation back when it started, so there wasn't much of a concern for the rest of the world in regard to baseball.
