I am a novice coin collector who has been collecting american and Intl. coins for about 62 yrs. I would like to have them appraised and I want to sell the entire collection about a 40lb. box Where do I need to take them to a reputable buyer. I think there are some keepers in my collection. Kent

For starters, get a Red Book.

This will help you identify potentially valuable U.S. coins. For international coins, look for a Black Book Guide to World Coins (or something comparable).

Of course, I'm assuming you already organized your collection by country and denomination; better yet, maybe your coins are also organized by date.

That is, meticulously appraising a 40 box of coins is a monumental task. And if the collection is not organized, I can't imagine you'll find a reputable Appraiser willing to take the job.

My Suggestion: Using the above books, identify a small number of potentially valuable coins in your collection. Then contact local coin shops and ask if they're interested in buying. You'll likely get a free cursory evalution/consultation that should help you decide if it's worthwhile hiring an Appraiser.

  • Thank you for all of your suggestions. I live in Arizona. Have the U.S. coin book. I have so many it would be a meticulous endeavor. They are pretty much all sorted by denomination. I have ancient coins but do not know from where, I bought 50 yrs. ago from a garage sale . I am looking for reputable coin dealers around my vicinity. I guess I just need to take the coins in and let them tell me my options. Once again, Thank You.

It may take awhile to do it your self. if you go to some one to have it appraised, that will more than likely be an added charge/less profit for you. Try to find a coin club, and maybe some one there would be willing to assist you. Good luck, wish I lived close to help. B)

If you're in the east valley look up Xavier Coin at Power and Main, the owner is a nice guy. I you're in Tuscon Rick at Eagle Eye is the only reputable dealer I know of there. The monthly coin show is this Sunday in Phx, I don't have the address but you can find it if you search the Auction Zip website for Arizona. The dealers there will not want to look thru such a large lot at the show, but you might be able to make a contact or two and arrange a time in the following weeks to take the coins into one or two shops if Xavier is far away.

Best of luck, you can send me a PM if you have any questions, I'm in Gilbert
