As a type collector I think I could still get on board with a box of 20. I only have 25 coins, all but 2 in my gold type set. Since the type set is already inpossible to complete (for me, being $$-limited), maybe I should narrow it even further. It just takes too long to find those extra special coins worthy of reconfiguring the collection for. I spend hours looking for coins every day as-is, would be tough having to search for a year or more between purchases!
the thing is even if you collect type gold, or 1793 cents, or million dollar treasures, there's more than 20 examples or varieties or dupes, or whatever. try picking only 20 coins from Hansen's set - you have to leave out 100 CACed historic rarities that were bought at good prices.

Hi,
I also collect gold. Just $5 libs. I agree searching for tough coins can be frustrating. But hunting is an awesome part of the hobby. I never feel bad after finding my toughest coins. There is nothing like a "wow" coin. I feel re configuring the collection is growth and excitement.
I realize though its possible to grow weary of it!

I like the idea.............right now I have a box of 55
I will probably downsize when my son goes to college,
perhaps to a small box of 4 as follows,

Wowee !

Thank you!
There are a few pieces that I will likely eventually rotate out in favor of other as-yet unacquired pieces. Those pieces might include really good representative pieces of the following:
A single box of 20 collection? Heh, I'm working on a box of 20 for a single Morgan Dollar variety....I'm far from a minimalist and this concept doesn't adapt well to borderline OCD.

I agree. You can't even keep a Buffnick date set in a box of 20, so I made a box of 23. I should have done 24 to allow for 1913 type 1 and 2.
Off the top of my pointed head I also think I need a box of 23 for my 2 cent pieces with the major varieties.
I'm now using two 20 coin PCGS boxes in a generic case for my coins, so in the future I will need to find a 17 coin series to complete a set of 2.
Like most I have several boxes of 20 and currently waiting on a box of 24
But also like most I keep my most expensive in one box So the question becomes how much is your box of 20 worth. Some I’m sure easily surpass the million dollar mark, mines around 16k give or take a grand…
Would Eliasberg, Bass. Garrett, Brandt, etc be considered famous coin collectors today if they limited themselves to just 20 coins?

I would love to see the contents since you post such great quality coins.
I appreciate the kind words, though I should disclose I generally only share the nicest/coolest stuff here. I am working on a project, though, to showcase more stuff. Won't be ready for a few months though.

I absolutely do not have the requisite discipline for it. Thought I would try with early US silver dollars, just going for the rarities. Well, the definition of rare for me encompassed more than 20.

Then, once you've past 20, why not 600? The guardrails are off.

Try passing the idea of a box a 20 off on Scrouge McDuck! Many collectors have that mentality!

In the business not a collector. Any gaps in display cases at shows can easily use stacks of graded WPM or raw PM, US mint products.
Using box of 20 is a good measure for me. My budget inventory level is number of x slab boxes of 20 . I have a min and max limit.
I also have a budget investment (cost) limit (for limitation of risk). If the stuff not selling no point in buying more.
I have a box of 20.

As much as I like the minimalist concept, 20 is WAY too few for me.

Organization is the key. One could have a slab limit of 100 (5 boxes) each box dedicated to a particular inventory class.

i always try to stick with a Three Lock Box, call me old fashioned.
I’ve seen some really outstanding Boxes of 20 and similar numbers. I tried once to cut my collection to a small number on paper.

I would do well to cut my collection (aka hoard) down to 20 boxes of 20.
