Why arent PCGS Labeled Minor Varieties part of Variety Sets?

I have a number of minor varieties as labeled on the PCGS slab, that do not show up in my 1916-45 With Variety Mercury Dime Set.

Is there a way to have them show up... and why aren't they automatically considered as part of the set?

Thank you!
Jeff

I mainly collect raw Ancients, PCGS Mercury Dimes, and raw CSA'S... but have misc other sets...Jeffhttps://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/mysetregistry/set/215647https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/mysetregistry/showcase/8378

The 1942-D Merc has more than 20 RPMs for the date. The 1939 DDO has three. The 1936 DDO has 8. There are sooooo many and mistakes are already made way too often with attribution of the coins they do accept. There would be a lot of mistakes with the 20+ RPMs for the 1942-D. Of the 8 different DDOs for 1936, only one is the FS-101 but four of the eight are so similar that four have been blessed as the FS-101. Shhhh, don't tell anyone. Lol. Some differences between coins would have to be seriously studied for way too long for a proper attribution and the TPGs prefer to only spend seconds on a coin.

Check out the RPMs for these Mercs. I bought them because I like them, not for the registry set.

    I really like this one!

If you do not already have it, I recommend The Authoritative Reference on Mercury Dimes by John A. Wexler and Kevin Flynn. The 2014 version of the book with a green cover and MS67+FB 1916-D on the cover. The book is by no means complete and it does not cover the different style MMs (Like 1942-Inverted S or 1943-Trumpet Tail S etc) but the book is fantastic. Of course, online resources are more up to date like Variety Vista.

The hunt for cool varieties is fun. I have the three above (along with others) just in case they end up in the Cherrypickers' Guide one day and get blessed by PCGS as part of the registry set. Don't hold your breath for the updated book that has been delayed for over 7 years though!

As for coins blessed by PCGS, I have the following at Great Collections right now:
    1931-S DDO-FS-101 PCGS MS-66+FB CAC

And the following will be listed soon.
    1936 Mercury Dime PCGS DDO FS-101 (FS-010.5) MS-67 FB
    1940-S/S Mercury Dime RPM FS-501 PCGS MS-67
1941-S/S Mercury Dime RPM FS-501 PCGS MS-64 FB
    1942-D/D Mercury Dime FS-501 PCGS MS-66 FB

Not yet sent to Great Collections are:
1931-D DDO FS-101 PCGS MS67FB CAC (Pop 2/0 when it gets attributed)
    1937-S DDO FS-101 PCGS MS67+FB CAC (Pop 1/0)

You can request a New Slot for any Registry Set - there is no charge and the worst that can happen is a decline - just enter the Cert Number and You should get a reply within a week on average

ALL Set Registry New Slots are added by someone who has a coin that does not currently have a Slot

Start a Show Case Set. You can put whatever you want in it.
I made this Show Case for PCGS 30th Anniversary Medals.

So I recently purchased a 1954 Engraved Tail Feather (ETF) variety and PCGS does not list that coin for the registry set. I know if you send in a DDO for example that is not a DDO that they attribute, they will label it a minor DDO. If I send in the ETF proof, would they label it an Minor ETF? At least it would be on the label. Here is my poor attempt at photographing the ETF.

I have never heard of such a coin, but see NGC will certify them. Are you waiting for the next cherrypickers guide to see if they include it?

Well I communicate with a few WQ variety guys and this is a coin we have been looking for in the wild and I found one. I knew they existed but had never seen one in hand. PCGS has the 1952 & 1953 Engraved Tail Feather varieties in the registry set, I would think they would add the 1954 also. I would like the variety on the label and the coin is already in a PCGS holder. I don't want to cross it over to NGC just to get the variety on the holder and then have it in an NGC holder. I would prefer PCGS label it as a minor variety than sending into NGC.

There is also a 1950 Engraved Tail Feather but I have never seen one or a photo of one, but some believe it exists. NGC does not recognize that variety, but maybe they just have not seen one either. But then nobody has a 1935 DDO WQ either and that is in the registry set.
