Unfortunately or fortunately, I’ve chosen for my entire broad collection to collect the highest grade I can comfortably afford, and as such, I avoid “better date” coins. In two sets of mine (Indian Head Cent set and my Standing Lib Full Head DATE set), I had to get the key dates. But in all of my various Type Sets, the dates of my coins are common - just the grades are rare. I also utilize DATE sets, like with my Lincoln Wheat set and my SLQ set just mentioned, so I can then choose the lowest cost coin for each year, but in a high grade.
There’s no right or wrong, just personal preference. Regardless, I greatly appreciate and get pleasure out of seeing forum members truly rare coins posted.
