This 1879-CC double eagle is in an XF details holder because of rim filing (“test mark”) on the reverse above the ‘T’ in states. Test marks were often cut into the rims of CC gold coins from the 1870’s as a way to ensure their authenticity and gold purity.
The major grading services will sometimes encapsulate coins with minor rim defects. What are the chances this would ever straight grade?

One of these two coins did not grade due to QC. Guess which one.
My gut says the top one
Agree, why would you ask us to guess when it seems to be so obvious unless there was a catch
It's not that. I think the colors in the second photo look a bit strong (which isn't uncommon for the glamor look TrueViews go for), but overall, the colors on the top coin look a bit off. The red base of the coin is a bit pale, and the green and blue (particularly on the obverse) just have a slightly unnatural hue to them. You see greens and blues elsewhere, but not necessarily in those shades. That's not to say that I'd be all too surprised if the bottom coin were called AT, but if I'm being told just one is, I think I question the color on the top coin more, even though it's not as bold and impressive as that of the bottom coin.
I was so dang excited cherry picking this VLDS DDO # 1 for $14 (worth over $2000 and would have been nice upgrade) that I sent it off to PCGS as soon as I got it. Low and behold it comes back damaged because some #$%^&* decided to try and scrape a carbon spot off just out from Lincolns chin! Oh well, win some , lose some.

Shoulder, just north of 5:00 -the mark is there, but it's slight. I created the "this is okay, but this isn't?" picture below way back when, but I've decided to just enjoy the coin as-is and not deal with any resubmittal frustration. The Washington quarter graded MS64.
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

you have to resubmit, that is grade appropriate. Submit as a plain 76s and then get the variety designation later. That will end up in graded holder soon or a later

This one came back Unc. Details Cleaned. I was kind of expecting a Unc. Details- Questionable color, I can't find any evidence of cleaning.
unfortunately, not all "cleanings" have PLS.
toned peace dollars are NOTORIOUS for cleaning and retoning, and i'm sure morgans are probably right up there as well. copper is another one that can get a bit hairy.
probably best to look for unnatural looking surfaces, which the rev seems to have that look. it isn't 100% but will usually get you in the ballpark and once you learn which coins/types have the tendency to get detailed for certain things, you know to be on the lookout for them.
i bought a monster toned ike at a show long ago and was so enamored with the color although the MAJOR PLS hiding under the toning didn't jump out at me at the show. got it home and felt it was closer to pocket change than a numismatic score. i paid i think $20 so that was a $22 loss if i add a little time and effort to the cost.
all that being said, i am VERY confident, at the least a few coins in this thread would straight-grade eventually either pcgs or ngc.

I normally do not buy anything punctured for suspension, but this token beyond the hole condition wise is probably in the top five and the second prettiest I've seen. It has great patina, on lustrous surfaces, with cool pull-away original red.
