How often is your ebay purchase or sale “Lost”?

    Regular purchases? Almost never.

Rips, deals and cherrypicks? 15-20%.

On average for me, delivery has been between 2-8 days for first class mail for the last three nor more months.

I’m curious, the OP said lost First Class with tracking correct? What happened to the parcels?
If they show any scans then it has nothing to do with Ebay…

It almost always looks like this...

This one is from a CAC seated Dime I won.

Purchased a Morgan Donkey Tail that seller couldn't find and then relisted with the correct description: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284820084333? Claimed it was sold in the shop. Yeah, sure.

What happens is that the sellers generate the usps label but never ship/drop off the package to mail it. This happens to me approximately once every 3-4 weeks, for at least the past decade from ebay sellers. Think I have 2 of these cases ongoing at this moment. I used to never leave negative feedback because I thought what was the point, now I do it religiously, and the sellers don’t even care.

I’ve even had heritage pull this scenario on me in the past. Scum comes from all sides in the coin business.

USPS tracking isn't what it should be. Here is one recent example:

A few months ago, I was expecting a coin I bought on eBay. I was home the day tracking showed "Out for Delivery" and was in my garage working on a project in sight of my mailbox when the mail was delivered at around 3:30. I did not go to the box immediately but stayed in sight of the box. I went to the box around 4:30...no package. Aware that they occasionally make two rounds on busy days, I waited and kept checking the tracking which stayed "Out for Delivery" until about 5:30 when it went to "Delivered". I again went to the box...no package. The local Post Office is open til 7:00 so I went to check it out. The clerk took my information and went to check on it. He came back with a story that floored me. The carrier on my route that day was a substitute. When he arrived back at the Post Office around 5:00, it was discovered that my package was not scanned showing delivery. The substitute carrier told whoever was in charge "I'm sure I delivered it" so they let him/her update the status to "Delivered." At this point I figured I was screwed. The clerk gave me a special phone number that he said someone would actually answer, not the typical number that gives you a run-around. I called the next morning and was told they would look into it. I received a call back later that morning that it was found still in the Post Office...it was never "Out for Delivery" the day before, but was now. I received it that afternoon.

Had they not turned up the package the next day, USPS would have just claimed they delivered it, and I would have had no recourse with eBay because USPS said they delivered it. Great tracking job, huh?

Isn't it still ebay policy that the seller doesn't get paid until they ship? As long as they print a shipping label they get paid, doesn't mean they shipped it.

I don't know of any eBay sellers that will ship before they get paid.

I meant that if you pay for the item ebay will not release the money to the seller until they print a shipping label to show that you have shipped it, again, not saying that they did actually ship it

Ok, so I've read what some of you said that that is not the case. The seller doesn't have to show proof that he mailed the item
Just another reason I won't bother with some of the sellers on ebay

I guess I’m just lucky. I’ve been all over eBay and bought many many coins and never had the situation your describing happen.
Must be way different buying styles but I can’t say why your luck is so different. Sorry to hear that.
I also have found USPS to be doing a good job. 😉🙀🦫

This is when you buy it, wait 29 days, and return it, just to be a pain in their rear. And then you do it again from another account

I've had a number of packages go missing. Most recent was a graded silver eagle, and the other was $1k worth of coins. I got a refund for the eagle by eBay. The other was re-sent by the seller (he took the loss - no word from usps).

I've also noticed that almost all my packages that come from the eastern part of the US, and more notably the northeastern, are almost always late.

Anything over a few hundred I use ups. I've only ever had one package go missing in 20 years and it was masks, during the pandemic.

If the seller didn't ship it, ebay will refund the buyer and take the money from the seller. That is not the same as eBay putting a hold on the money up front.

I'm calling BS. Are you seriously saying that Heritage NEVER shipped the item? That is different than there being a delay between label creation and actual shipping.

If I pack something tonight, the label will show generation even though I can't ship before Monday at the earliest. That hardly makes me a "scumbag".

This has nothing to do with late or delayed shipments, this is about sellers never shipping or disappearing with the coins. I bought a coin from heritage’s wholesale department, they take my money, get the coin ready to ship and voilà, they lost it before it could be shipped. Then they proceed to tell me that they can go out into the marketplace and find me a replacement one, but I’ll have to pay an additional $1300.00 on top of what I had already bought the first one for. These companies are no better than individuals.

Everyone makes mistakes, but it kinda becomes suspicious when they happen every few days.

Here's a good one for Fed-Ex fans! Keep in mind they deliver quite a few packages to my house every year. I've been on the phone with them a half dozen times about this! Seems their driver turnover is horrendous right now. No, I don't expect I will see my package today.

I never had the USPS lose anything,,,as in 30+ years...until this year.

I received a delivery confirmation...raced down to the mailbox...and nothing!

I can only assume that the mailman delivered it to the wrong mailbox...but it was gone and I had no recourse since it was tagged in their system as delivered!

The scanners the carriers use are equipped with gps, if you press the issue you may be able to get an exact location it was scanned "delivered", if it's recent there's a chance a supervisor will make the carrier retrieve it.

  • I got one in transit now, it was scanned delivered Friday but it wasn't in my mailbox. The tracking says it was delivered to a parcel locker, so I know it didn't come to my address, i don't have a parcel locker at my house. I'm going to have to call my local post office tomorrow because every time I try to do the online inquiry I get an error message.

About a year ago I found on eBay a rare War Savings stamp affixed to a vintage savings stamp folder. I won it for a bargain price and paid immediately. Shortly after, the seller refunded me and sent me a message stating that their dog had chewed it up. They literally used the "dog ate my homework" excuse.

I messaged them back and stated:
"If you don't want to sell it then just say so. Fabricating a lame excuse makes you a liar. Send me a photo of the mangled item or it didn't happen.".

I was never able to get a reply from them after that.

The " My dog ate the whatever" is a very real problem in my house. The new kitten pushes stuff off tables and the puppy chews it up. I lost a bunch of empty 2x2s and 90 plastic sleaves for slabs yesterday. No coins lost yet.

I had a seller send a $300 coin to an old address; one I hadn't used for 14 years. Tracking showed it was delivered to my old PO address, so someone got a nice gift in the mail. However, the old address wasn't in the eBay system anymore. EBay compensated me for the loss. I figure I must have bought coins from this dealer long ago and he still had my name in his computer.

While working in Everglades NP, I lost several orders (football program & ~$300 in Barber quarters) that were likely stolen by the mail and personnel staff.

I had one seller "lose" a cherrypick I scored after the completed auction. I never reveal a cherrypick until I have it in hand. However, I will add this warning - Never take a photo of a prospective cherrypick before hitting the BIN or it'll be gone. I foolishly did that for an R7 SLH variety and I stewed over that loss for a few days. Someone got the coin while I got the seller's picture (below).

    1974-S WB5 (R7).

I've also had two coins in slabs or ICCS plastic crushed by post office equipment. Both were undamaged, and one was featured in a thread here, in part because upon regrading, a EF45 CAC became an EF40 CAC. JA stated that he doesn't distinguish between the two EF grades, feeling one grade is sufficient. I disagree as EF45 is my favorite grade for circulated coins. I eventually accepted the change because it really was more accurately graded as an EF40, IMO (shown below).

That royally sucks. Not least because ATM I have five gold coins on their way to me via the USPS. All in that price range.
