I bought this 1838 Bust half that is a contemporary counterfeit, fooled both of us. Letters on edge, not reeded like real ones. Also earlier Bust design.

just to keep my eyes dialed in. is that a scan or a light box image?
pretty neat that they mixed up the bust and date type. looks like silver wash as well? the banner looks really high on the rev and/or the eagle is low/small?
kinda love the wonkiness of CCCBH and pre 70s fakes. they caused their chaos and now they've mostly retired.

I heard from Winston Zack on the issue:
1838 Davignon variety 3-C. This variety was struck on a German silver planchet. This variety is associated with 4 other varieties in a counterfeit family consisting of 5 varieties known as 'Too Legit to Quit', and the lettered edges on all 5 varieties are the same. This variety is one of the most common counterfeit CBHs known with an estimated surviving population around 1,000 pieces. These counterfeits were likely made during the panic of 1837 period which lasted until the early-mid 1840s.
