Hard Times Token

I’m a novice coin collector so please go easy on me. I have a hard times token that is similar to pcgs 77554. I say similar because it’s the same year but mine is ungraded.

I’d like to sell it but don’t know if it’s worth spending the money to get it graded first or if I should just take it to a reputable coin dealer and sell it that way. Any suggestions?

If you post good pictures of the coin some one here will be able to help you easier. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here that have helped me with the same types of questions.

  • Thank you for the advice. I’ve heard I shouldn’t clean it so it looks rougher than it really is. Hopefully this works…

Yes, don't clean it. But it's rough and apparently damaged.

I can't make out much of the detail but unless it's a very rare token I don't think it has much value, unfortunately.

Tough to tell, but it looks like it could be an HT-201A... 1835 Copper Howell Works Garden NJ. Here's the coinfacts link

  • Thanks, the one that I mentioned in my original post was given a Rarity-9. That one though is in much better condition, was graded and sold for almost $3k.

HT-201A is struck over a U.S. large cent which accounts for the four figure price realized and the R-9 rarity rating. I see no evidence of the OP's token being an overstrike but rather just being a regular HT-201 with problems. A HT-201 in a no problem fine catalogs at $150 and can found for a bit less fairly frequently. Most all HT-201 suffer from uneven or weak strikes

  • Yes, it’s definitely Howell Gardens. I live close to where these tokens were struck.

@TokenPro - Extremely helpful information. I wish mine was an over strike but doesn’t look like it is.

I’m thankful though for everyone’s help and appreciate the quick responses. You guys are the best!
