eBay not accepting American Express in certain categories

My interest in this: I just succumbed to a very generous American Express offer which (naturally) requires a substantial minimum spend.

No problem — I buy lots of coins! So I registered the new card with eBay, no issues. Now today I go to pay for some significant purchases and my Amex card is grayed out: "Not Accepted".

Phoned eBay (mainly for fun) and they said it's up to sellers which cards they'll accept. But 1) suddenly absolutely no sellers in the coins category are accepting Amex and 2) I'm a seller too, and Managed Payments is always the automatic (and sole) option when I'm selling. It doesn't permit me to specify one card or another.

Anyway, research brings up this thread:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Buying/Unable-to-pay-with-amex/td-p/31757799/page/2

Where people report that it's certain categories (e.g. coins, jewelry) which are affected. My question: can anyone here who has an Amex card registered on eBay confirm this?

FWIW, I just went and tried to purchase a $5,000 amplifier from Japan. Amex no problem.

You need to be careful with AMEX in general when buying coins, currency and bullion, depending on your card's terms and conditions these purchases may be considered cash advances.

    It's an AMEX thing.

tie your AMEX card to your paypal account. When you go to pay for an ebay purchase choose paypal and then the CC as your form of payment. This way you get CC and/or PP buyer protection. You should still earn your CC perks, I do with my Chase visa.

I had trouble a few months back with amex as well. I wanted to take advantage of an amex ebay offer that amex sent me, go figure

I had the same issue. Also intermittent issues with a Citi Mastercard (works on eBay/GC/DLRC, fraud block everytime on SB/HA).

Thanks, I will try this. As soon as I can locate my ancient PayPal account!

This quarter Discover is offering 5% back on paypal, not sure how useful that is now that ebay has disconnected from it.

LOL! It works because ebay accepts Paypal.

As said above just connect your AMEX to PayPal. Been doing it since managed payments started.

    So...does ebay accept PayPal? J/K

Seriously, thanks to Mr Derry and everyone else. It is a good workaround! Of course I had to overpay for a coin now just to test it, but life is for living, whaddya gonna do.

    Congratulations.
Wait until some caring person buys you an eBay gift card , knowing your a coin collector, and you discover it’s worthless. Completely!! No coins, currency or bullion 🤨🙀🦫
